any advice/experience on who is better between Direct Line and Privilege? My renewal premium is almost the same especially after Quidco cash backs at around the £260 mark for full comp, PNCD, legal cover0

Hello People!
I'm new, be gentle...lol.
I used Moneysupermarket.com last night, prompted by the tv ads rather than here. Anyway, my renewal from my current insurer is £424
Having used the site I found a quote as low as £227 from Sainsburys. However, you have to enter all your details again to actually insure through Sainsburys. I did that and the quote came up as £470. I checked all the assumed details by Moneysupermarket and they were all fine so I can't work out why there is such a discrepancy.
Can anyone enlighten me?
Grrr..just used Confused.com now. Took some time to fill everything but got quotes no problem. MoreThan came up best and clicked on 'Buy Now'. They provide a user name and password that you must use to retrieve the quote but MoreThan site doesn't like it. Decided to just enter all details again and get a quote - site just crashes. So much for simplicity!
Another update - used IE7 instead of Firefox for the quote on MoreThan and it seemed to work fine. Don't know if the browser made the difference or just server sorted itself etc. Got a reasonable quote and went for it.
To sum up my experience of these sites which check loads of insurers - they are useful overall in getting you close to the best quote but with the odd dodgy result or poor continuity onto the actual insurance companies site.
Confused.com worked best for me. Moneysupermarket came up with dodgy quotes that were way under what the actual insurer wanted.0 -
Been a bit lazy over the years, couldn't be bothered to shop around. After signing up to this site, it motivated me to have a look around even though our car insurance renewals aren't due for quite some time. Saved £111 per year on my car and ........£270 on my husbands. Couldn't believe it. Norwich Union have been charging me way over the top for years.
:j :j :j:dance: Proud to be dealing with my debts0 -
I'm ensured fully comp on my own car, a 2003 VW Bora 1.9 TDi 130bhp. I have a few tips:
1 - adding adults brings your premium down! Even if you wouldn't dream of allowing them to touch the car (hey my mum doesn't know she's even on the policy!), put them on the policy and it brings the premium down!
2 - Economise the truth, but carefully... I spend more hours at work per week than I do at Uni, hence I declare my job description as my occupation - although I do cover myself by admitting to being a student part time (it's a full time course, but...)
3 - as Martin said, shop around. Do all the price comparison thingys that he has listed on his website...
AND THEN HAGGLE!!!
My cheapest quote was with an Irish insurance provider (Can I name them? Please delete if necessary moderators: Quinn), I called my (then) current broker (happens to be a friend of a friend) to see if they could better their renewal quote and he advised me to go for the next cheapest one because they had such a bad reputation for paying out!
I called the next on on the list (Diamond!!) having got a quote off the internet, and asked if they could match the cheapy one - they bettered the quote by £20 and threw in free breakdown cover... They didn't charge for paying by credit card, so I get my 1% cash back too!!
If you don't ask you don't get!!
Oh yeah - the final price I paid was £538.50 and I'm 21 with 3 yrs NCB + pass plus (not sure if it still applies though) :rotfl:0 -
i used the brokers you recommended, but as i'm a new driver with a claim under my belt the prices are all high! you know anything that can help me?0

We have been looking around for car insurance for our 19 year old son who needs it for commuting. Most quotes on the comparison sites were ridiculous, we actually got a better quote from the broker down the road who you can give more information to! Anyway, we are with More Than and our son has been a named driver for over 2 years now (he only passed his test in Feb 2006) but they said they couldn't cover him for commuting. My husband did an online quote with More Than with all the correct info and it came up with a fairly decent price so he phoned them up again to point this out. He got to speak to a very helpful young lady who was keen to help us, and though she couldn't explain why they could do it online but not over the phone, she came up with another option. If he didn't use the car between 11pm and 6am they could cover him and it was even cheaper!:0

I am a bit stuck at the moment. I am expecting the arrival of a new car in about one month and am looking around for car insurance. I have been driving for 10 years and never made a claim. The problem is that I havn't driven during the last year while based in central London. in the 2 years before that I was on a company insurance in Spain and in the 4 years before that was on a company insurance in the UK.
Am struggling to find any sort of discount - is there anywhere that would be good for a driver with a sensible and safe history. Most are quoting me far more than when I was a 19 year old student who had just passed.0 -
I have just got done reading a article at http://www.consumerbadcreditguide.com/carinsurance.html , is this true that your occupation effects how much you pay in car insurance. If you ask me the Government should control what these auto insurance companies can do. Its just not fair to lower income people! What do you guys think?0
