Hi All,
I just wanted to relay some good news with using Martin's plan, + barcaly's cash back scheem.
I was originally insured with elephant.co.uk for around £330 renewal.
I got the cheapest price by using the web scrapers, which came up at around £283. I then called elephant back, who would renew at this price, and put a letter in the post with the new price. So that was £50 already saved.
Once I had that letter, I then phoned up barclays to quote. They came in at £350. Within £100 of Elephant.
The result is my insurance is down to around £233 for this year, saving nearly £100. :-)0 -
My sons renewal is due on the 7th April 2007, i am a named driver on this policy, he paid approx £1500 last year to Admiral Insurance for a 10month bonus accelerator policy, to date he has had 2 non fault accidents, i have just rang Admiral and asked them for a renewal based on the fact that we have had no claims made against them, i was astounded when i was quoated, wait for it.....................£2800   , i questioned this and was told that they take into account non fault claims, apparently its based on some statistics that if you've had 2 non fault accidents you are more than likely to have a third, what utter bollox, considering none of the claims made were any of our fault with the third party taking 100% of the blame, to me this is just a huge con and he has been punished instead of receiving a reduction in his policy..........mad as hell i am......
Hi Eck,
Your relationship legally with your insurance company is one of "utmost good faith" as you are both on the same side, you are meant to tell the insurnce company about questions they have forgotten to ask you. (It sounds like bollox to me , to use your words).
I've not had a claim against me for 40 years (touch lots of wood) but I have had a few accidents in that time but always been able to pin them on the other idiot, or they have been minor and within the excess. So even though I am on maximum no-claims, I must have been very profitable for my insurance companies over the years.
I would have thought having no claim accidents would prove to the insurance companies you both have your wits about you and you are a good risk ?
(Perhaps a course of "defensive driving" lessons might be a good investment,
I have a daughter who tends to smash up her cars while her brother has been driving for a dozen years accident free - she just will push it instead of taking it as it comes)
Shop around and let us know how you get on.

I received my insurance renewal today - I've been doing 10-month policies to get some no claims built up and now have 4 years! (Has taken ages, after a few years where my car seemed to be attracted to other cars and central reservations, I'd finally got to 2 years and then got hit whilst parked by an uninsured driver - grrrr)
So with a decent NCB under my belt, I decided I'd see how much a regular 12-month policy and protected no claims would be. Current insurer (elephant.co.uk) wanted £500. Used confused.com which brought up cheaper quotes but with much higher excesses - on changing the cheapest policy to a similar level of excess that I currently have, the cheapest price I could get was £450.
So I rang back elephant and said their insurance was too high and I'd got a better quote with AA - and they've reduced my quote to £425!
So I'm a happy bunny - thanks to MSE!
And they told me when I finally move to my new house, I'll get a refund of £25!January Grocery Challenge: £200 Spend £158.99

I'm just about to buy my first car and am unsure of the benefits of some measures which i have been reccomended to minimize my insurance (not from martin):
1. Is there any benefit to buying a car and registering it in my own name?
2. Are there any benefits/dangers to adding myself to my parents insurance if i use their cars to practice in/borrow?
3. Is there an optimum price/age for a first car to minimize insurance?
cheers

I then followed the link to the Post Office's site to get the exact figure and to put in the additional details. On reaching the last page it would not let me accept the quote and told me to phone the Post Office quoting a number which just happened to be her Policy Number. It appears that the £50 Cashback is an incentive to join them and will not be given to existing customers.
I was with the Post Office last year and had my £50 PO. I followed Martins 4 step plan this year and the Post Office came out best again (if you take the £50 cashback into account). I have had a leaflet from the Post Office saying it's for new customers only but I thought I'd give it a go as the terms and conditions for the offer on their website don't mention anything about being for new customers only. Luckily my quote went through online and I'm expecting to be sent a postal order. Maybe they haven't sussed it's me because I got married since taking out my last policy so this new one is in a different name! If they catch on and pull me up on it I shall argue it wasn't on the terms and conditions on the website.;)0 -
Do the screenscrapers not take medical conditions into account?
Have just used confused and moneysupermarket and I swear I entered the fact that my husband had a medical condition and 3 year licence into at least one of the 2 sites. However, when I followed 2 of of the quotes (both from brokers) to the purchase page both required me to phone to give medical details. I did this for one and ended up with a higher premium and a different insurer! As I've left it till last minute and was beginning to lose the will to live I accepted.
I've still saved money but perhaps wouldn't have spent so long on the finer detail if I'd known the price was subject to change due to medical disclosure.
PS I'd already called my existing insurer Zurich to see what they could do. After phoning me back twice (and taking all the details again) they reduced their price by only £30.0 -

You ring 0800 085 1898 and speak to intelligent humans in the UK to give your details. They ring back c 30 mins later with their best price. If it beats all your other quotes then all you do is pay £14.99 and they will arrange it for you.
They found me an extremely good deal so I reckon they will be worth expending £14.99 to save lots of further hunting via websites etc.
I checked and they are FSA registered so all in order on that score and I have no connection with them except as a likely new customer.

I want to second this advice - I used them yesterday and got some handy help from them. They're based in Stoke-on-Trent; geographical number is 01782 838404. Searching in the FSA Register, I found them listed as a 4-man company with firm reference number 314751 (you can check online at the FSA website yourself). Friendly people...they tell me that they should have a website up and running in about a couple of months' time.
They also seem to be affiliated to the publication called "The Matthews Guide to Motor Insurance" (ISBN 0955333806), which is written by one of their members and apparently is available in W H Smith (see this SAYNOTO0870.COM thread).
My opinion is that they're certainly worth recommending to someone as a one-stop shop or for someone who doesn't want to trawl through confused.com etc and then check all the omitted providers and their intermediaries. They basically run through Martin's first three steps of the cost-cutting system, though I suppose they won't address possible gains from cashback sites such as Quidco etc.
I'm also a member of The Money Club in Datchet, and I used them too, but didn't find them to be quite as resourceful. Thumbs up to Best Advice from me then!
Just to let you know, I've discovered Best Advice's website is up and running now, at https://www.bestadviceuk.co.uk. It is a very easy-to-use website. You are able to fill in your details on-line and a very friendly, experienced insurance expert calls you with a very competitive quotation.
I have used Best Advice for myself and managed to save a substantial amount of money. As a result, I tried them again for my mother, I filled out her details and once again, they came up trumps and managed to save her a fortune too!!! Well worth a try, in my opinion - what have you got to lose?
There is also a fantastic offer of Legal Protection, which can cost over £20.00. Best Advice sell a very good Legal Protection for £4.99, which again, can be purchased on line or over the telephone: 0800 085 1898. Good luck and best wishes!!!0 -

Martin,
Having recently been involved in an accident, in various conversions with my insurers I was told that if you have a number of years of No Claims (in my case 9), there is really no point having Protected No Claims (unless you are a really bad driver who has a number of crashes each year!). They told me they only take a maximum of two years off your no claims when you actually have a crash which is your fault. As they only count the No Claims for up to five years, in my case I could have a least two crashes before my premiums became affected. A friend who recently renewed his insurance with a similar No Claims to me, asked his insurance the same questions as me and got the same answers. He ended up saving himself over £300. Worth looking into I think.0 -
My renewal arrived today from Direct line, over £400 to pay it up.
So I used Martin's system and went via Moneysupermarket and got loads of cheaper quotes. Though if you were to pay them up it could add £50 to the cost.
Then I tried the Tesco insurance and was quoted £280. I went back to DL, but they were not interested in matching this, so I have signed up with Tesco. I Also decided to make a single payment which helps keep the cost down.
So a saving of £120.
Thanks MartinWe all know what we should do, we just don't know why we don't do it.0
