  • Car insurance is one of the only things that I have always shopped around for, every now and then I go on to my own insurance companys website as they advertise the 10% online discount, I have however found that by putting in the exact same info that my company holds the quote even with the discount comes in more expensive online! Can you shed any light on this??? Also as the name suggests I ride a motorbike, the quotes I got for my latest ranged from £530 tpft to over 2k tpft!!! My current company are great, I tell them roughly what I want to pay and they come back to me with a price usually within a tenner! So essentially I have saved £1500 by shopping around for insurance!

Daughter 1 passed her test 3 months ago then went to to uni (no car). While she was learning we added her to our insurance for a couple of months for practice (£60). :j

Second daughter now learning but when we tried to add her to the insurance they refused and said we could only put her on for a minimum of 6 months and wanted £700. We only have one car. Also gave me a totally ridiculous quote for first daughter who wanted to use the car at Xmas and has passed her test.

I am trying my best to make sure my kids do not attempt to drive without insurance but it seems insurance companies try to make life as difficult as possible and seem to be completely inflexible. Is it any wonder the rates of uninsured drivers are soaring

I know under 25's are too much of a risk for insurance companies - so they don't want the business. Where does that leave us? Mum taxi fully operational over Xmas, despite eldest daughter wanting to drive.

I have followed Martins' steps on this but not many of the companies are interested once I want to add a newly qualified and learner driver, so provide a ludicrous quote.

As they are away at Uni, is it feasible just to get them insured for the full year, or only when home, if at all?

Would be grateful for any suggestions / tips - more flexible insurance companies please

Just saved £92.43 on my renewal premium from my existing insurer Liverpool Victoria.

I don't tend to use the bots as they don't tend to come up with the type of policy I want, i.e. guaranteed no claims discount and unlimited claims.

The only company that offers a similar policy to the one I have is MoreThan, but usually I find their quote to be only about a tenner different so don't tend to bother changing.

This year however, the MoreThan quote came in at £55 cheaper with a slightly higher excess (£150 instead of £100) plus I could go through Quidco and get £40 cashback.

I rang LV first though to see if they could make a better offer and after matching the £150 excess they offered me £360.80. I thought I'd mention the Quidco £40 cashback so they offered me a 10% discount which took it down to £324.72 which is only a couple of quid dearer than I could get with MoreThan and no hassle of changing!
This site has saved me a fortune :money: ...it's also cost me a fortune!

if anyone cares but just done mine with Admiral. £456 quid and no no claims, lost it when a bike collided with me on the motorway. Tesco wanted £900 to renew with them

found it funny when using Confused.com. They said their prices are the same as going direct. Hmmmm £100 dearer more like!

My car insurance came up for renewal at the end of December. I was with Toyota and they said my insurance (like everyone elses) had gone up 8%. I phoned them to haggle and they wouldn't budge from their quote of £599 they said all insurance had gone up and I was unlikely to find a better deal. I went to Quidco and looked through the insurance companies they supported and got a quote from the AA for £380 with £70 Quidco cashback. My insurance therefore nearly halved this year. Shopping around really pays off!

Above are a comparison site for car insurance quotes via an 0800 number and entirely independent of any broker or insurer.

You ring 0800 085 1898 and speak to intelligent humans in the UK to give your details. They ring back c 30 mins later with their best price. If it beats all your other quotes then all you do is pay £14.99 and they will arrange it for you.

They found me an extremely good deal so I reckon they will be worth expending £14.99 to save lots of further hunting via websites etc.

I checked and they are FSA registered so all in order on that score and I have no connection with them except as a likely new customer.

Daughter just taken out insurance with Prudential via Quidco who are paying £100 cashback at the moment. Then got another surprise when they sent her a Green Flag breakdown policy which she had not signed up for. When she queried it they said it was a promotion they had running until sometime in April for new customers - so all in all, a pretty good deal :j
  • Can anyone help?
I was keen to use the 4 step process for reducing car insurance premiums so contacted Direct Line to ask about cancelling my current policy 8 months before it was due for renewal. I was told that there would be a 25% charge if i did this. I looked at my insurance schedule and it said cancellation rate was Pro-rata + 1 month. My questions are:
Was the person at Direct Line telling the truth when they said there was a 25% charge?
What does pro-rata +1 month actually mean in terms of cost (my yearly premium is £193)
Any help would be very gratefully received.

    Thanks
    David

Looking on ecarinsurance.co.uk (monthly payg 8 months = 1 year no claims) I have found out for a car I am interested in fully comp is cheaper than TPFT which is cheaper than TP alone (seems weird) If I select £500 voluntary excess.

£81.65 a month fully comp (£500 voluntary excess)
    £84.10 fully comp (£250 excess)
    £86.46 (£200)
    £100.81 (£0)
    £83.66 TPFT
    £89.18 TP only

The final quotation screen for comprehensive also suggests Breakdown Recovery Including Homestart, and Windscreen Cover are included, but are not with TPFT or TP.... Although this would cost more per 12 months monthly than yearly, the benefit is I will get 1 years no claims after 8 months so hopefully my premiums will go down. Also as the car itself is likely to be scrapped within a year, it means I will not be penalised for cancelling the policy if needed, by anymore than what's left in the month paid for.

I would never claim if the car itself was stolen as the car is pretty much worthless (it is being offered to me free of charge) most expensive things would be my own property and the stereo.

In this case, even though the car is worthless is it worth getting fully comp? If I report a car as a total loss to the police and DVLA etc would I *have* to claim on the insurance and take the excess hit, lose NCD etc? If I don't then I'll go for fully comp £500 voluntary excess.
