That looks so lovely I'd be inclined to leave it as it is.

My paint I used on my kitchen cupboards yesterday is still a bit 'tacky'............why would that be ? I'd have thought it would have been totally dry by now

Eek! Now you tell me to code it BEFORE taking it apart!! Ah well, what's done's done! :o :rotfl:

Seriously, thanks so much for the advice. :)

I haven't got very far yet. I have taken it apart, removed the lining and have started sanding it down. I've also bought some lovely pink/fawn stripy fabric from IKEA (I was going to use a remnant I had but decided to get a heavier weight material, and I have bought a one-coat satinwood white paint to use after the undercoat. I have started measuring up card to use for the lining... that is the best tip so far, originally it must have been professionally lined because the gold satin lining of the main part (though hideous) was perfectly ruched and glued on with trimming, without any card at all.

Mine is quite big... here is the before (ooh I've never posted a pic on this forum before - I'm quite excited!)

Oooooooo - this is going to look fantastic. Did all those bits come in it already? You'll have lots of fun. Also, don't worry about the code bit: mine had numerous ways it could have gone back together, and we couldn't find the right one. Yours only has two cantilevered drawers, so it will be easy.
I can't wait to see how you get on. Is Bibbly here? Bibs: isn't it lovely!

That's lovely. I'd do a NEgirl and paint it cream, leaving the middle shelf and top shelf as waxed wood. It would look absolutely stunning.

That looks fabulous, you can cram a lot of goodies in there. Do you do a lot of sewing?

Re: my sewing box... I'm a beginner to sewing; so far I have only hemmed curtains (the reason I bought my machine) and made a few reusable shopping bags, but I want to learn. I have a reasonable amount of 'stuff' to put in the smaller sections, including a lot of vintage Singer hand machine accessories from an old hand machine I was given that I have more as an ornament than anything else... I thought the chest part would be good for keeping safe the projects that I am currently working on, cut pieces of fabric etc.

Icandream: yep, it came completely full of stuff, much needed to be binned but I have a fab selection of vintage buttons, cotton threads and a card of different shades of brown silk for darning stockings! The boot salers were clearing out after an elderly relative has passed away. It's about 100 yrs old they claimed, some of the stuff inside is definitely from around the 40s anyway. It's not made of particularly high quality wood but it is a nice veneer (ie sturdy enough to survive a light sanding!) :D
