Having spent a while on here this morning I was bemoaning the fact that I couldn't buy anything to shabby chic as we are selling our house.

Then, I spotted a bedside cabinet that is an awful yellow pine. Looking further I realised I had LOADS of items that are nice shapes and would shabby chic wonderfully well. Four bedside cabinets, a chest of drawers and a bedhead. I do have a nice little dresser, but it is stripped pine and dh would hate it to be messed with. So, I've decided to look out for an old dresser.

The two 'chest of drawer' type bedside cabinets I'm going to take the tops back to the wood and paint the bases. I'm thinking of using F&B's 'clunch' I like the colour - but love the name as well. I wondered about a 'grey blue green' colour for the bedhead.

    I'm feeling quite enthusiastic. :D

Just found this cool site. http://www.sue-davies.co.uk/index.html

I have just brought out of hiding, a horrible pine bedside cabinet, we bought this furniture for the boys rooms when they were younger, it looks like pine that has gone damp then been varnished, a greenish tinge in it, yuk. Anyway it had all been put away. My small bedroom where we have our computer, we have fitted furniture to keep the computer/office area tidy, but I wanted to cosy up the room, so I brought out the bedside cabinet, put a cloth on it and a lamp. When we come back from our trip I think I will paint it, no time at the moment. I am also going to try to hang some more pictures in there, I liked the way Vintage Pleasure hung hers in the childrens playroom, I might copy;). I am SO not original:eek: just a copy cat.

Thanks for that. I have a colour chart and dimity is warmer than clunch. I don't know if you read 'Miss Read' books, but there is a character in them called 'Dimity'.

I went on to the F&B site and my bedroom is 'antique white' and blue. The site says 'slipper satin' is a good match and goes well with other whites. I might use that for the bedhead.

I shall also use the 'brush on' wax - which I have in the garage. I used it on my new fire surround.

    It was meant to be.....................

This is a fascinating blog. However, it made me wonder if any of our more prolific shabby chicers use a spray to paint with to get that special finish.

Hi, use a good quality matt emulsion, then top it with a clear matt varnish. I used to use wax but have found that the varnish gives a better finish and is a bit more robust. One good tip if you are only doing a smallish item then a tester pot is usually big enough, you can always get this in a darker colour than wanted and let it down with white/off white paint. Remmber that the wax/varnish will darken the colour slightly so allow for this. When rubbing the edges back to reveal the wood remember less is more just do the edges first. A good place for ideas is to flick through some of the Home mags in the supermarket Period Living/ Country Homes and Interiors are two good ones Gustavian Grey seems to be the in colour this season. Have just re-done my old itchen table/bench set this colour and must say it does look well.

    I've been Money Tipped!
    I'm here!

Haven't found the car boots around me yet! Going out in a bit - I'm going to look for a recycled pet (from the animal shelter). Don't think you can shabby chic Guinea Pigs though! I'll probably hit the charity shops this afternoon.
