Molly, I've found it''s better to wait (if you can be around for the finish) to wait till the last few minutes to bid on what you want, as you say if you bid early often you are outbid, plus the price is driven up higher than it might have been.

    Persevere, you'll get there :D

Okay, I have a style question..

When we move house finally we will be able to have curtain poles - yippeeee!

I have quite a lot of wrought iron in my house, sidetables, light fittings, dining chairs.. so I'm thinking I'll have to have WI curtain poles to tie in with this, trouble is I don't want them! Do yoiu think I would get off with a different finish?

I have lots of wood, galvanized zinc, brushed steel, white etc too.

Have a look at this cottage :eek::eek: I'd be sick if I lived there and my grand son would soon clear up some of the clutter :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Why do Americans just have things too far, lol??

I do love the rug with the roses on though:D

meanmarie why not practise on the ones that are worst first so it doesn't really matter if you don't get it right first time

Can I ask for a bit of advice pleasewhich has really nothing to do with shabby chic, but is a restoration query? I have some Victorian dining chairs in various states of disrepair...think that there are either 10 or 12 in total and only 3 can be used as they have all fallen to bits...dowels loosened and popped. Would it be sacrilegious to put them together again using something like nomorenails...anyone I have asked has either said "throw them out and buy new" (DS3!) or "don't touch them yourself get a professional to do them" (DD4) Will not throw them out and am very nervous about looking for someone to restore them professionally as previous experience makes me think that there are lots of people who set themselves up as professionals and they don't do a good job for huge money.

So...should I just have a go myself...the ones which are really in bits will probably be beyond me, but if I could get six or eight nice mahogany chairs for general dining room use I would be quite happy and dead chuffed...what do you all think??

Rather than using a professional furniture restorer, have you thought about having a chat with a local reupholstery firm. They usually repair any loose woodwork bits on upholstered furniture so might be willing to repair the woodwork on your chairs. Alternatively you could source some furniture makers woodglue, although to be honest if the dowels have popped they may have shrunk too much to be used again IYSWIM.

I love the garden and the conservatory, but the rest of it is way OTT! I'm sure they love it, but I don't think it sits well with our more reserved tastes!

    Paint question.
OH has promised me a trip to Focus Do it All tomorrow (lucky me !) to get some paint for our kitchen cupboards. They're old wood but I colour washed them some years ago,a sort of beige colour that now looks c*** !! What sort of paint finish do I need ? Normally round the house I'd paint woodwork with a gloss or satin finish but I don't want the kitchen cupboards to 'shine', if you know what I mean. Would Vynyl silk be ok ? I'm sure this was been mentioned before but can't remember how far back.

  • Hi Guys,
    What's bark cloth please?
Barkcloth is a type of thick cotton material that was commonly used for curtains in the 50's and 60's.It comes in lots of lovely designs and is great to work with.

That house makes me nauseous just looking at it.I think it would really stress me out having all that stuff everywhere. It just all blurs into one. But each to his own I guess!
