I would take your picture of boats (which is gorgeous BTW!) as a starting point for your dining space.Use some of the colours as accents in the rest of the room. You don't need to go for a whole nautical theme.Try and place things so that your eye is drawn around the room from piece to piece. That way it makes the room feel whole.Think about creating different levels in the room. This is easily achieved by the height of pictures, placement of table lamps, vases of flowers, curtains, furniture etc.Chose a few pieces that really make you smile.
Can you pull the table out a bit more and really make the centre piece of the room? We all have a tendency to put furniture up against walls but sometimes bringing them into a space defines it more and makes the room feel better. Can you fit it where the window is and move the armchair? That way you get to see the light better.
That dresser is crying out for some crockery.Whatever your taste get it out and on display!! Cuddly toys are cute but I think they aren't making the most of that beautiful dresser. If you want to keep them in your sitting room they might look better displayed on a shelf with the pale painted wall behind them.
As you have a few darkers colours in the room like the chair, the carpet and the television you really need to work with them otherwise they will always stand out.So I personally would keep the walls neutral like they are but add some darker accents like maybe a darker lampshade or a few pieces of coloured glass (you can pick these up at charity shops)
Definitely invest in a few cushions and throws. They add texture and depth to a room which really softens it. I don't think you have to go all frilly and girly to make it look more feminine. You have all the basics with the beautiful furniture and lovely window you just need to make the most of it.
    Hope this helps!

Budgeteer, do you know what is under the carpet? Maybe some floor boards? Have you waxed the dresser yet? Did he make the bench? Absolutely beautiful!

Can I pick your brains ? I'm having a clear out of 'stuff' that was boxed away and found four pieces of material (not sure whether they were meant to be place mats) They have lovely images of borage and morning glory -beautiful shades of blue and very simply done. I've had them for an absolute age and no idea what to do with them. Don't want to shove them back in the box never to see daylight until the next clear out purge -so, ideas please on what to do ????

mary43 could they be framed or if they are the right size you could make those arm rests that go on sofas etc? Perhaps get some plain fabric for the backs and make the pictures the fronts of new cushions? hope that helps :)
