I hope you find the shabby chic thread helpful. I've merged your question to it to keep the answers together.

You could put some lace along the edge of the shelves, someone on here has done that can't remember who though. Vintage? or maybe CTT?

My husband made me a gorgeous pine and hardwood welsh dresser with three shelves. The problem is that it's in our small sitting-room along with the oak dining table and oak bench and everything looks kind of, well, 'blokey'. At the moment I have some ceramics and a couple of teddy-bears on the shelves, and an old-fashioned type lamp on the table and I'm struggling to find truly money-saving ideas to make the room pretty and to soften the look.
I am wondering about house-plants but they would have to be hardy (Or plastic?) and the only plant I know that is both is the spider plant and they don't seem to sell them any more.

I would really appreciate your ideas.

    Many thanks
    Lesley

  • Here are pics of the home-made dresser and oak table. You can see how tiny the room is. Thanks for the idea of lace, but I think in our small room it will look too busy? Perhaps these pics will give a better idea of things

    TIA

Triage beat me to it! I have been following the shabby chic thread for ages now and it is FULL of wonderful ideas. Lucky you having a great hubby to make you a dresser, does he want to make me one? LOL.

Hi poppett, he does make furniture for people but I think you live too far away:hello:He also paints and frames pictures as you can see.Thing is, he's always painting yachts and boats, never flowers and girly things... sigh
  • Mmm - Now I've had a think about it, maybe lace is an option...

A few weeks ago, at a car boot sale, I bought a lovely piece of new linen for one pound, it was a single curtain and I salvaged the curtain tape and hooks for another project.

I have covered two chair seats and also placed underneath the glass of two tables. I have enough left over to make a tote shopping bag too!

Not bad for one pound eh?!!

Incidentally, the two tables were just a few pounds for the pair and the bergere (?) armchairs were about £15 the pair from a local auction.
    Gosh - That is beautiful:T

omg lesley that is lovely, what a talented dh you have!! :T

How about a crochet throw for the back of the chair and/or some shabby style cushions too? A little light rug on the floor? A plain white/cream cloth for the table with an jug of flowers in the middle etc....... just a couple of ideas but the whole thing about shabby chic is that things kind of take on a life of their own, you will add one bit and something else seems to follow and before you know it its all your own style and fallen into place :) Good luck and let us know how you get on :D
