Makes it all worth while doesn't it VP :) I love the fact that there are so many people that do not follow the trend with brown and cream everything thrown together with leather and suede making the home look like an argos display page :)

I love the vintage/shabby style! I have always loved collecting eclectic pieces that just make you smile when you walk into a room.

Each to their own remember. ;)

I managed to finally put up an old oak utensil holder that was 50p from the charity shop this week. I've used it to display my T and G Green stoneware and a few old medicine bottles. I'll post a pic when I can.

It's only really my Kitchen that could be said to fit into the shabby chic style and that's only cos I've been collecting bits and bobs for years. The bedroom is heading that way though but I'm trying to keep colour out of there cos I love white bedrooms with dark wood.

Our living room does have the ubiquitous brown leather sofas but the walls are painted in Antique straw and I have lots of wooden bowls and my antique Singer machine.

I'll love some vintage stuff in the bathroom, especially French inspired but it's really too small.

All these pics on here are amazing.

Yeah I agree :) but it is lovely to see homes with character! each piece bought for a reason or items that tell a tale other than being mass produced and sat in a warehouse for distribution, although I have to say the backbone of my furniture is from Ikea, but it has quirky style

I have to say there are some great ideas here though and I thoroughly recommend Farrow and Ball paints too, the price is well worth it.

Mind you, nothing wrong with brown leather sofa's, I haven't got any, but I think they are lovely and traditional. You don't have to slavishly follow the trend that the shops portray it in.
  • Hi, first post on here, I think.

I've got a brown leather recliner suite which we love:confused: bought for comfort as both DH and I have bad backs and DS has CFS/ME. I don't think our home looks like an Argos Page  I do love IKEA stuff, so other furniture is from there, but accessories are what individualise it and living in both Norway and Germany have helped. It's definitely a work in progress as we moved in three years ago and are only just decorating now.

Suggestions welcome for wall colourings rather than just brown and cream. I have thought of duck egg blue, but also not sure about floor covering. Concrete floor, so not keen on wood/laminate as it would be quite cold. And we have dogs! Thanks.

  • Maypole the walls are actually wallpapered. We used John Lewis' own brand paper Jonelle Mineral Texture in Biscuit.I always thought John Lewis was expensive but there own brand stuff is very economical aswell as great quality.
The carpet is a stripey wool carpet, in pale browns and creams, that we got on sale in a local carpet shop. It's very similar to the Laura Ashley stripe carpet but less than half the price.
The bed is ILVA and the the bedding IKEA.
The wall-lights were sourced online and I replaced the shades with IKEA ones.Thrifted pictures on the walls.
The curtains were made from £3 a metre fabric bought from a great discount fabric shop in Manchester.Where I buy all my curtain fabric. In fact I start most room schemes with the fabric for the curtains. They can be the most expensive things in there.
Finally the chest of drawers was a late night ebay bargain picked up for just over £100! It's victorian and solid mahogany. There's a split in the wood down one side which is what put people off but you can't see it in situ.
We just got an Edwardian little sofa for the bay window again from ebay £56! Had it recovered and it looks excellent.
I'l take some more photos when I get chance!
  • Hi Scottish Lassie i just wanted to offer a bit of advice on painting kitchen units.I love painting furniture and have tried loads of ways over the years.I always used to use Farrow and Ball as their colours and quality have always been excellent. However they are very expensive and recently alot of the large DIY stores have released ranges that are equally as good and much cheaper. For my kitchen units (pine carcasses and MDF panels) I used a Kelly Hoppen eggshell from B+Q.It's waterbased which makes working with it so much easier as drying and recoating time is 2 hours as opposed to 24hrs.Also brushes can just be washed in water no nasty chemicals.I always give my painted furniture a final coat of clear wax too as it makes them easier to keep clean and gives an extra layer of protection. Hope this helps!
  • The argos look was a figure of speech people :) no nastiness intended, I am sure you all know what I mean!

VP thanks for the Flick link there are some fantastic photos of home interiors and projects on there :)

Hi Shabby Chic-ers. I am looking to buy some rugs that look old even if they are not. Muted and faded colours. Laura Ashley type without the price tag. Any suggestions where to get some please ?
