I have a queue of items to F&B, but can't paint for long due to my RA.
I need to deal with a set of bookshelves in the bedroom, and spotted this:

which made me think I could 'loose cover' my bookcase as I can sit and sew for longer that I can stand and paint. It will take less than 2.5 metres of furnishing fabric.
    Has anybody else tried this?

I can't really help you with 'loose-covering' your bookcases, although I imagine it would be easy enough, but I can suggest this idea of attaching canvases to the front of the bookcase, if you are artistically inclined :)

That looks fantastic!! How did you paint it? As in, what kind of paint, how many coats and how did you distress it? :T

Thanks for all your lovely comments. My b/f SO doesn't get why I like it but I'm glad you girls understand!!

I sanded it really well, dug through my old tester pots till I found a colour I liked. Just normal emuslion, 2 coats, let it dry well and then scuffed over random bits with sandpaper - (I used a fine paper so as to lift different depths of paint) *

I am still to rub in a dark wax which I am hoping will give it even more depth but dont have any as yet.

It was a lovely way to spend a wet & windy weekend :D

    * just an extra thought and ignore if teaching to suck eggs  - but I wouldn't use an acrylic paint for this as it basically covers the wood in a layer of thin 'plastic' and i imagine you would risk layers of the paint peeling off when you come to sand bits at the end as oposed to scuffing it to look worn.

Thank you for the suggestion, I showed this to OH - as he is very 'unhandy' he went pale  , so I shall return to plan A and loose cover the shelves. It's all straight lines so as long as I measure carefully I think it will be fine.

My problem will be choosing great fabric , oh and posting the photos  .

I can sew but I am IT incompetent at times and have been avoiding posting the cabinets, trolley etc because I am sure I will get confused with the photo host :o

Hi everyone. Picked up a plate rack,/shelf unit this morning. Not antique in any way but thought that wouldn't matter as I'm going to paint it anyway. The only problem is there are screws that show on the sides and quite a few of them, they're not sunk deeply enough to fill and paint over. Is there anything I can do to disguise them? Also how thorough do I have to be with sanding, is a quick go-over enough?

    Anybody? :p

Hi cat64...if you're doing it shabby chic how about putting some lovely buttons, heart shaped or something over were the nails are? Or some little ribbon bows in a contrasting colour. Sorry can't think of anything else.

    Yep wink.gif

Take out the screws one at a time.

If you have a countersink bit for your drill, use that and gently go in until you think the head of the screw will be level with or below the surface.

If you don't have a countersink bit - use a drill that's just a tiny bit bigger than the head of the screw.

    The trick is ---> gently.

Refit the screw and move on to the next one.
