Have been looking at getting some old advertising signs for my kitchen but all the ones I've seen have been quite expensive. Then I came up with an answer. I bought some postcards of old advertising signs from ebay at less than 50p each [incl postage] and some clip frames from Range at 59p each. Made one up this morning and I'm really pleased with it. For less than £1.10 each,I have a picture framed of an old advertising sign for my walls. To see it , go here
We don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.

. I meant to ask rachelleblondel does the paint clean ok? No children, but 4 cats and a BF with a black Labrador most w/ends!

    Hi Juliettet
I have 2 kids, 2 large dog's, 2 cats and it seems to be okay with a wipe over. They do also make a modern emulsion which can be washed down. I think it also depends what your orginal walls are like. With our house being so old the walls are awful, and always feel a bit cold & damp and after trying everything it seems to be the only paint that can hack it...all others have given up the ghost & peeled at some point.
    simplicity is key

I will Elliedee thanks. After living so long in magnolia houses I feel although white is still neutral it will show my shabby stuff off better. I meant to ask rachelleblondel does the paint clean ok? No children, but 4 cats and a BF with a black Labrador most w/ends!
I really do love F+B paints and would love to use them everywhere as the colours have so much more intensity and absorb the light beautifully.I use them on all the woodwork, ceilings and plasterwork. But in my home the estate emulsion just can't withstand the wear on the walls.Particularily greasy little fingers! I'm not the only one either Read this post http://kittythimble.typepad.com/kitty_thimble/2007/11/pre-christmas-m.html

    They look great!
I did something similar with adverts from vintage magazines. You can usually pick one up from ebay from about £3 and there can be plenty of attractive adverts in one magazine. Then I just picked up frames frim charity shops or IKEA to frame them. They look great. My fav is a 1950's one for Spangles.Do you remember those sweets we had as kids?

Sorry if this has already been asked but porb take me forever to look back through all posts and im at work...supposed to be working!!

At each end of my wall cupboards in the kitchen are blank bits iykwim which i am thinking of making one of them into a blackboard. Can i just use ordinary black paint or wud i have to use special blackboard type paint?
  • i am sat here in my little room ( when we're feeling posh we call it the morning room!!) and thinking of how we can decorate it..

i was thinking buyin F&B paint to make it feel more authentic but it is a walk through room and im thinking perhaps it wont be such a good idea to use this paint if it attracts grease, scuff marks etc,
am thinking of doing a very pale vintage blue and perhaps cream... it is a dark room anyways and im thinking even if i try and put a brighter colour up nothing is going to to take away the fact its a dark room..

i want to put line one of the walls with bookshelves like these

    http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/20033863

and put in one of the mini electric stoves that you can buy everywere now.. make it have a focal point..as at the minute it is just dominated by our dark wood desk and computer and then mix matched furniture..
im also after a red stripey armchair ( just have a feeling that red will look lovely!) and then im going to paint my mirror either the blue or the cream to go above the stove.. ( need to stick a shelf up to act as a mantle piece i think!)
and then on the other side of the room im going to paint my old beauru ( aagh cant spell it !!) an old cream colour to house my computer
and then finish off with lace panels on the window

    its only a small room 10 by 8'5 ...
what do you think.. do you think this sounds like a plan!!! ??
and do any of you have piccies of your little snug type rooms or have blogs i could look at which may have ideas !!!!

If you like the F&B paints but they don't stand up to sticky hands, why not give the painted area a coat of clear varnish up to the point where the sticky hands reach. I read this tip somewhere. F&B do a flat matt clear varnish and I think it is water based, so shouldn't "yellow" like the oil based ones. I realise this is not very moneysaving as you are buying two products. Not suitable to do a large area.
  • thanks for the tip maypole... ive often thought about using clear varnish.. especially in the kitchen instead of having a tiled splashback, but always been a bit nervous incase it did go yellowy

ive just been on the wilkos website and found this blue.. think this would be quite nice and id probably only need the one tin if im using cream aswell (which i think ive got some left under the stairs from when i did my hallway!)

its not to cold and i think with wood flooring and the bookcases and mirror it could look quite fresh..

you can get proper blackboard paint at b&q - if youre not in a hurry for it im getting some anyway to make some heart shaped wooden chalkboard for orders so you can have some of mine - it shouldnt take much if youre only doing one cupboard :)
