I live in sheltered housing, I don't know anything about the area don't meet neighbours in the area. Don't do social media. Son works in a Supermarket warehouse so working long hours and working days off. Don't like to bother him. He will fetch food and medicines and come and open things for me. He uses his key I leave things in the tiny hall and he does not come in further than that.

    Hi Nurse Maggie,
It sounds like your knitting magazine is going to be useful this month. Which knitting magazine do you get? My MIL has been hinting she would like  magazine subscription and I am looking for ideas. As she knits a knitting magazine could be a good option. She tends to knit larger items jumpers etc. rather than toys as she says they re too fiddly but she knits fancy patterns which look much more difficult to me. She does a lot of patchwork and quilting too but says the patchwork magazines are mostly repeats of patterns she already knows with slight variations so  knitting magazine might be more useful.

I get Lets Knit there are a few of them.  You can't just keep on kitting jumpers for yourself you end up no where to put them. My 6 year old DGS is obsessed with little cuddly toys at the moment. I get a pattern and free yarn with the magazine every month.

Simply Knitting is a good one.  I'm usually about three months behind.  I tend to buy then depending on what the free gift is, lol

Many thanks for the knitting magazine suggestions - much appreciated. I will have a look at the websites of the 2 magazines that you suggested to see which might be better.

I have now knitted about 20 hearts for the local ICU: in pairs, one is given to the patient to hold, eg during phone calls, and the other given to the family. I think there are several variants on the theme. I now know the pattern off by heart ...

New owners took over the LYS on 1st March - thus not eligible for any government help. They are trying to keep going by taking orders and delivering them locally or posting them out. My sister's offered to knit me a cardigan so hoping they will have some nice wool to sell me: DK but I can't bear 100% acrilyc.

They also want to fill their window with flowers of all kinds when they re-open, so I intend to do a few of those: I have multiple poppy patterns and a lovely one for Peonies.

And there's the Peace Rose Project if that doesn't keep me out of mischief. Of course I still have some socks and a cardigan to finish, but I like these short projects atm.

  • Can I pick your experienced brains please?

does anyone use a wool winder that they could recommend?

whilst I've found knitting, especially  very therapeutic since lockdown, I can only manage squares that are made up for charity blankets. I tend to use Aldi wool but as the balls are so big, they're not really manageable so would hit on the idea of making smaller wool cakes out of the balls...of course if anyone has another ideas of how to manage these balls it would be much appreciated!

When I had cones and small things to knit, I'd wind some onto a piece of cardboard. You could, if you were sufficiently precise, weigh a finished square, and wind to that weight.

My mother had a couple of wool winders, for skeins, but I think she thought the best was my father's or brother's arms.

however, some friends have recently started using a Nostepinne: I'd never heard of such a thing but it produces balls which you can then unwind from the centre. Again, you could do it to weight if that would be helpful.

I've bought a book with 50 different patterned squares. I want to repeat them as little as possible. I've decided that lacy patterns may not be too difficult to use for squares because they come out in different shapes. I'm looking for some flower patterns to add to the less attractive and dark colours. I guess It will be a sampler. I've done a few fairisle patterns and have some more to do. I have a book with 400 square patterns on order. Online sites are getting pages and pages of out of stock. Good job I have an extensive stash.
