kippers - you could try charity shops, or ebay (ebay is my friend :p) although patterns on ebay aren't always a bargain when you add in postage.

Also, try going back through the thread and there are loads of links to free sites (haven't used them :o but some are highly recommended).

I am sure someone will be along soon to help out with more ideas.

At last resort - some knitting mags have patterns in for stuff like that but they are soooo expensive.

What wool are you likely to use? Should I try DK or Aran? (being lazy - no scraps around and not sure what to start looking for. Hate tension squares with a passion).

I'm using double knitting wool just because that happens to be what I have squirreled away. I'm not a regular knitter, I sew rather than knit but these are nice & easy. I've made a couple & they've worked out well.

Thank you, Dobie. I will have a rummage when I get time, but I may spend some time in a charity shop as I don't think I have any dk stashed.

Really, it breaks my heart in some ways. I was trying to get some space in my house and I got rid of a HUGE stash of wool. My mum had visited at least once a month and she crocheted squares for blankets that went to charity. There were over two bins sacks absolutely crammed, and I got rid of a load of smaller lots of wool as well as I just was running out of space. Now I have no stash worth speaking of and this ideal project.

Even the huge tunic I have just finished that was knitted with two strands of dk has hardly any left, just about enough to sew it up with (whenever that happens :p)

Readicut do a pack of 'hobby' wool. It's a pack of 20 x 25g balls of wool in all different colours. It's £12.99 (plus p&p of course). How much do you need for these little hats...?

I need to join the spendaholics thread on DFW board.

I had looked at this wool because my uncle, as a joke, said he wanted a cable sweater with all the cables in different colours, in angora. Well, the angora can go fiddle, but has anyone tried doing a sweater with different coloured cables? I have a pattern that has a lot of cables in dk. How tricky is it? I would love to surprise him.

Kippers, if you join Ravelry there are hundreds of free patterns on there, with photos and write-ups from other knitters who have knitted the pattern. It is a treasure trove, I am spending far too much time on there instead of knitting. I can't recommend it highly enough. I could look for one for you if you tell me the sort of thing you are looking for, ie age, style, complexity.....

made on like this years ago and it wasn't too bad once you get used to having several little balls of wool at the back. it did look very nice when it was finished. I think your uncle would be quite surprised to receive such an unusual jumper.

I was thinking of making one in mohair, but decided it would be a nightmare trying to stop them sticking together, so the angora would be the same I think.

Oh dear! I hoped this wasn't going to happen! I wanted to knit myself some socks like the ones my German friend made me. I finally found some suitable yarn at Sheepish in York and ended up spending a fortune, as there were a couple of other 'must haves' there as well! I didn't think I would ever want to knit again, but I have a feeling I'm going to get hooked!

I'd second Ravelry. But be careful...it's insanely addictive! :o

I haven't read the whole thread so apologies if this has been mentioned but I LOVE the website Ravelry. There is a waiting list to join but it is a great place to find patterns (including the best of the free ones).

Edit: Oops just read to the most recent post. But agree it is addictive!
