  • I use a knitting loom a lot as I can crochet but never took to knitting. I got a sudden yen to make socks and it is fabulous for that but I have also made scarves. If you want a look, I am on Ravelry with the same user name as on MSE.

Thank you, I will pop across to Ravelry in a mo for a nosey. Can I ask which looms you use, I have seen round plastic ones, long plastic ones, wooden ones.........

    Some lovely makes posted here.

I am unable to learn to knit (left handed, no one to teach me, can't even learn from youtube! Oh and can't crochet either!) and I wondered if anyone here used a knitting loom? Having looked at them on youtube I think I could possibly manage that!

If anyone uses them are they easy to use and can you make lots of things with them?

    Many thanks in advance.

My daughter is left handed but I taught her to knit as I do - right handed - and she manages fine with it. Maybe you just need to try for longer as it takes a while to learn to knit no matter which is your dominant hand.

Oh and I have just learned to crochet a granny square following crochet crowd on You Tube and kept going until it was big enough to be a cot blanket, so anything is possible to learn.

  • Moments of Sanity - my favourite and first loom was a KB adjustable sock loom but then i got the bug a bit and bought a big one too which I have used to make shawls (goodness knows why as I know now that I will never ever wear them). Good looms are not cheap but I think will last forever as my little sock loom is wooden with steel pins. I did buy the cheap oval one from Lidl as few moths ago but it is awful and if that had been my first try I would never have stuck with it. I think you may catch sight of my favourite loom in some of my pics on Ravelry.

    Hi all :j

It's very quiet here but hopefully someone will be along to offer me some advice - or alternatively, I will work it out for myself as happened last time when I typed it out on here - doh!! Anhow, I am making socks - first time of in the round......

Got to the heel & this is where I get stuck:

    Heel turn

We'll work a French heel here. To build the trapezium shaped heel, turn cont working on your heel flap sts as foll:
    Row 1: Sl1, K16, SSk, K1 & turn Leaving rem 12 sts on needle
    Row 2: Sl1 K, p3, p2tog, p1 & turn leaving rem 12 sts on needle
    Row 3: Sl1, k4, ssk, k1 & turn leaving rem 10 sts on needle
    Row 4: Sl1, p5, p2tog, p1 & turn leaving rem 10 sts on needle

cont in this manner working 1 extra st with each row until all sts have been worked ending with a wrong side row - 18 sts rem on heel turn

Done first 4 rows but can't work out what to do now!!

    TIA if you can help!!

I haven't done socks on needles for a while but....
I believe what you do is....
    Row 5: Sl1, k6, ssk, k1 & turn leaving rem 8 sts on needle
    Row 6: Sl1, p7, p2tog, p1 & turn leaving rem 8 sts on needle

Because each time you knit a new row, you increase the middle stitch worked by one...It is a number pattern so next time it will be a knit row again and you would need to K8 after slip stitch
and the row after that would be a purl row again and you would P9 after slip stitch

What lovely makes you have, I bought 3 plastic circular looms and a long loom from a knitting shop and so far have been really pleased with them. Not sure what I will make with them but might have to make my dog a cool having seen your wearing one! :rotfl:
  • Thanks for the compliment - I have my moments craft wise but have an awful lot of unfinished stuff too. The dog was modelling hats which I made as Christmas present as he didn't much care for wearing a hat as you can see form his bemused and embarrassed expression :) If you do try sock making on a loom there are some very knowledgeable folk on Ravelry in the sock looming group. I found the first one a steep learning curve but now it seems easy.

Here are some free patterns for snowmen.

And here are free patterns for dogs - you can knit whichever one looks like the Snowdog, in white.

So, more happy hours watching the DVD, and you can both cuddle the Snowman and his dog!

Hope your GD is soon running about again.
