Thanks Pen-Pen for the link, I read on here a few days ago about your DD knitting for the Co-Op, but I couldn't find anything when I had a google.

I think I will try and get my DD to have a go.

Hi, I would likie top start knitting, any ideas or tips where and how to start?. What's easiest to start off with? Would like to see if I could make something for xmas. I did do some when I was very young, talking over 20yrs ago now, so wouldn't have a clue where to start now. TIA kal25

To start with I would say try a scarf. You can get some lovely wools which make a scarf look really fancy. They are about my limit but they do look fab.
  • I did a scarf in eyelash yarn recently and I think I used 5mm needles - don't think the size is crucial though.

Well, thanks to being off sick for 2 weeks I've finished my sweater in Rowan RYC Alpaca and it looks great if I do say so myself. I wore it yesterday for the first time and felt really proud. I've also made a little sweater for my 2yr old DS in Sirdar Snuggly (blue with white flecks) which he looks really cute in. I'm now nearing the end of my first sock - just have the toe shaping to do. I have to say that sock knitting is so cool - think I might be addicted!

Love the idea of the charity 'red square' and I'll have a hunt in my stash later for some red wool.

Sorry for the confusion :o It was in the Co-op magazine, but when I looked more closely, it wasn't organised by them at all

Hi PENPEN- Thanks for the link to the Big Stitch. I shall make mine tonight and also tell my mum - I think it's a brilliant idea!

hi :) my mum wants to knit a jumper 4 my DS but the pattern states that we need 25g balls in crepe. i asked the bloke on the wool stall on the market if he had any/ could get me any (no wool shops left here) and he doesnt sell it, just baby, aran and double knitting.
can anybody suggest a good replacement wool for crepe please?

You can usually substitute any DK for crepe - I've not seen it in any other thickness. Crepe yarn just describes the texture - it is highly twisted so you get a dense quality to it -not so much softness or fluffiness as usual.

Patterns are based on the thickness of yarn, the tension it is knitted at etc and the only reason that pattern manufacturers tell you to use their yarn is because they want to sell it. You should be able to use any DK wool for any DK pattern - the only thing to beware of is that heavier wools (eg with more wool in) have less yardage than lighter ones (eg with more acrylic).

Tension squares are a MSE tool! Knit up a little square (10 stitches by 10 rows, or larger if you can be bothered) and use it to compare your tension to that required by the pattern. It is different, then try again with a size larger or smaller set of needles. This will help you to ensure that your knitting doesn't end up too loose or too tight.

i need to make a jumper for son for xmas. did one last year for hubby now he wants one too. needs to be chunky so do i buy chunky wool or aran wool also he wants a polo neck. needs to be quite easy . has anyone seen any pattern on here that fits the bill, was sure someone on here posted a pic of one they had just done but cant find it now? was hoping to get the wool on ebay but not found anything suitable yet and they all seem in 500gram lots and i always need more than the pattern states as my tension goes a bit haywire i think
  • Right, I'm new to this thread (and new to knitting actually ;) ). I've been learning to knit since about February from The Art of Knitting magazines - and time permitting have so far only managed about 10 squares and 1 scarf :o

However, I'm now approaching my most ambitious project - Jean Greenhowe's Santa Claus  So far I've managed to do both the left and right boots and legs (and my finger has the blister to prove it :rotfl: ). Tonight I am attempting to knit both legs together and continue with the body (they are both on different needles) so please wish me luck :D

If I actually get this finished by the end of October - mid November I might start on knitting Mrs Claus as well.
Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )
Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)

Where did you get the pattern for Santa Claus? I have been knitting for years but am still a beginner.....scarfs, hats and very simple projects...how easy is Santa?
