Please can someone help with a knitting instruction? I bought 5 50grm balls of baby bamboo at a bargain price.

I am knitting a short sleeved top in a wheat stitch pattern. My problem is with the second row:

    P6, p2tog tbl, wrn, rept .......

How do I purl tbl? Wool in front makes a stitch as it goes over needle to back. Then wrn creates another stitch, so I'd be increasing rapidly.

    I'd be grateful for advice.

Doesn't p2tog decrease by one stich? So you'd be keeping the stich count the same by wrn...

It's purl 2 tog through back of loop, so a stitch is made as the wool goes over the needle.

I tried putting the wool back, but that is knit, then, eh?

It is exactly like k tbl but more awkward. ;)

If you were doing k tbl, you'd insert the RH needle into the st, at the back, going from right to left (as normal). Or through 2 sts, from right to left, if you were k2tog tbl.

When you do p tbl, you insert the RH needle into the st, at the back, going from left to right. If it feels super weird and awkward the first couple of times, don't worry - that's normal.

If you do p2tog tbl, you insert the RH into the sts, at the back, going from left to right via the 2nd st then the 1st. The points of both LH and RH needles are pointing towards the right, when you do that. It feels like you're twisting your hands! You'll probably drop the working yarn, the first time you try to catch it via this awkward manoeuvre. Again, don't worry - quite normal and you'll get the hang of it after a couple of goes.

Many thanks and to Cuddles! I have bookmarked the YouTube video for future reference.

Not sure that I will do this damn jumper. Driven me mad to start. I'm happier with Aran than lacy.

    Hello
Im hoping you lovely knitters might be able to help me :) my nan taught me to knit when I was young ive only just started to knit again I can cast on and off knit and purl so as you can imagine ive done a scarf lol I think the scarf is in moss stitch like knit 3 purl 3 pattern and ive done one with that frilly wool stuff really easy and possibly cheating lol
Anyway I was wondering if anyone has any simple ideas I could try next I cant read knitting patterns I like the idea of knitting things as a present or sonething for my little one who is just 2. I also get confused with the different types of wool needed I have needles of 7 mm and 5 mm there was a book in smiths looked good but it was 25 pound seems an awful lot !
    Thankyou for any help :)

Until you get more confident and want to try shaping and knitting in the round, you could stick to things like cosies and cases e.g. for cell phones, glasses, Kindles, etc. Big rectangles, folded up and sewn along the side seams. ;) If you want to practice increases and decreases, you could also try making triangular flaps to close your cosies and cases. Or simple buttonholes with yo (yarn over) stitches. But if that seems too much, you can get away with open tops for cosies and sew-on press studs for case flaps!

For your little one, you can make a surprisingly reasonable teddy bear with rectangular shapes. This is actually a charity pattern but no reason why you can't use it for your own purposes: http://www.teddiesfortragedies.org.uk/knit.html

The larger the needle, the heavy/chunky the yarn. I'd suggest aran weight for the 5 mm needles and chunky weight for the 7 mm needles. If you're not sure, read the label on the ball/skein of yarn and it will have something like a wee square grid marked x by x, gauge, yardage and - most importantly - recommended needle size. ;)

When you are beginning (or resuming) knitting, the type of yarn isn't hugely important. Nothing wrong with cheap acrylic yarn. However, something with a wool mix will look better and something with cotton will show more stitch definition. I guess the most important yarn tips are simply: soft yarns will bobble faster (and start to look scraggly) and pure wool can't be washed at hot temperatures (it will "felt" i.e. solidify and/or shrink).

Are you a member of Ravelry.com? If not, join for free and browse the patterns on there. You can filter them for knitting, free, needle size, yarn weight, yardage and how easy to make. :)
