Dyeing Rowan Wool Have any knitters dyed wool? I knitted a cardi a couple of years ago with Rowan wool but I don't like the colour (a beige "rich tea biscuit" coolour) and haven't worn it. I'm annoyed that it's a waste of v v expensive wool, so I've bought a dylon dye today (a handwash dye, it says it is suitable for wool), but I'm a bit apprehensive about using it- the thought of wrecking £60/70 worth of wool is making me feel a bit sick! (Its Rowan Big Wool- 100% Merino)
I came across this info when I was considering doing the same thing (never did get around to it); there might be something useful here.

I have spent hours over the last few days, just skim reading this amazing, helpful thread. I am gobsmacked at the beautiful knitting that you do, esp orkney star, wow.
I started knitting 55 years ago and have had a break of a few years but am back to it now and am getting so inspired by you all. I learnt something new yesterday, russian joining method, well I never and I saw a you tube video of knitting two colours with yarn in the left hand as well as the right hand
I found a site with such helpful free videos, so clearly explained

Trouble is that I have one more cardigan to knit for dgd and then two tank tops for dgs so I am being very restrained, well I have been buying sock wool if I am honest and have vacuum packed my stashes so that they look smaller. I can`t complain about the children`s clothes as they are enjoyable to make and they are such a bargain ie 6 garments + dolly clothes from the leftovers and all for just £10 from kemps
Toe up and toe down socks, why are they different?0 -
my latest completed project
That's fantastic, can I ask where you got the pattern? I've been looking for one for ages now, but the only ones I can find are old leaflets that I can't track down or ones for children.
Haven't done much knitting for a while now I have lots of projects on the go but have got to the difficult parts on them and come to a halt.0 -

Kemps are wonderful aren't they - just as well for me that I don't live near there.........
As for socks - toe up or toe down is very much a 'horses for courses' thing - I love toe up as it means that you can make the sock as long as possible, knowing that you only need enough yarn to cast off, plus I really hate Kitchener stitch. I'm sure someone else, OrkneyS ?, will tell you why they prefer toe down.
Which ever you choose - enjoy - socks are one of my favourite projects, especially with self-striping wool0 -
Kittie; Goodness that's a bargain knitting marathon £10 for all that :j Can't do socks so can't help you with your conundrum there.
Teeni; Great jumper. Seems a pity that people can't get such nice patterns in this country.
Here is my bundle of fun. An assortment of knitted rabbits and one stray monkey. More on me b*og.
Watching a ballet show!0 -
Love the rabbits, Pennib - wish I had the patience for knitted toys as they're so sweet.0

Hi, I'm a keen knitter and have now tried my hand a few baby blankets but they seem to take forever (I'm quite slow). I was wondering if it would be quicker to crochet, and if anyone could suggest a book and/or website to get me started. I have no experience of crochet.
Many thanksI must remember that "Money Saving" is not buying heavily discounted items that I do not need. :hello:0
