  • i am one of the baddies who in the past never used a tension square as i was always to excited to get knitting. i have stopped this now as my knitted items always ended up quite a bit bigger than they should. so using a 3 1/4 size needle and casting on 28 sts over 36 rows should have given me a 10cm square with a paton 4 ply 100 per cent cotton .the wool which i used was 100 per cent bamboo ribbon wool but came out as a 12 cm square.....what size needle should i use instead and do i have to do another tension square

In theory you need to use smaller needles. However in practise the tension is so far out (20% bigger) that I don't think you'll get it to work. Also 'ribbon wool' tends to knit and handle quite differently from a 'standard' cotton.

The only thing that I could suggest, depending on what it is you're knitting, and how close the fit has to be, (and also how desperate you are to try this pattern and yarn combo), would be knitting a couple of sizes smaller (that is dress sizes/ages, not needle sizes !) - but that would be very hit and miss.

thanks for your advice, the top i wanted to knit is not that original that i cant find an alternative that will be more suited to ribbon yarn, thanks again

  • Lovely pics everyone. As usual :D
I'm on with some fingerless mittens, without the thumb bit. That looks far too technical for me. Will post a pic once they're done. Haven't made any since last year. My how it's come round again quickly.
