Hello all,

Just a quick question if any of you can help me...

I'm looking for an Arran sweater to order and am wondering if anyone would be able to point me in the right direction?

Rather than trawl the internet I thought I'd ask here first.

I've had a quick look at Etsy but it all seems to being coming from the US.

My Nana was a great knitter and produced all sorts of things for us when we were kids. I am lucky enough to still have one of her Arran hats. Would really love a jumper.

Ive plans to tour the Highlands and Islands and north of Scotland but it will not be for a couple of years, so don't want to wait til then!

Many thanks,

X

Just Googled Hand knitted Aran jumpers and chose pages from the UK only and came up with this - not cheap, but beautiful and authentic!

DS school hat finished, designed by me and knitted in 100% wool guernsey 4ply. Just need to sew a name label in, as don't want it disappearing into the ether! He wants socks with the left-over yarn.
Mardatha I'd look on ravelry for some ideas. I have never used 2ply or cobweb yarn (cobweb>spider>aaaaaaarrrrggh ) x
lucy_lemonKnitting for dummies (from the ....for dummies range) meant to be good. Also try you tube for some videos on basic stitches. My tip is to start with double knit (DK) yarn and around 4mm needles, perhaps a simple scarf pattern or maybe even a facecloth or two just to practice stitches.
boredjellybeanHave you found your feet yet or are you needing some more ideas?

Hope everyone is well.

Hi there OS I've managed to get some circular needles from my mum but the patterns still look foreign to me lol I really am hopeless, they talk about a magic loop & even after watching a YouTube video I'm still lost I guess I'll have to just jump in & try it :( I feel like giving up but I really am determined to be able to knit more than a scarf

• Hi there I'm after some help - I'm a beginner with knitting, so far all I can knit are squares & scarves :rotfl: however I really want to knit some baby leg warmers, my little one is not quite crawling, but my neighbours daughter is 8m & I thought I'd try & knit her a pair.

I've searched around for patterns but they all seem to be for knitting in round - which I can't do a) because I've never done it before & b) I only have straight needles lol can anyone give me a simple pattern to follow for knitting two piece & stitching together (or I guess one big piece & stitching into a tube)

Many thanks Sarah xx

Hi Sarah

Seriously no expert here, but why not just knit a 'short and wide' version of a scarf or square pattern you already know you can do, and simply stitch it up the side? Essentially making something which looks like the knitted version of a loo roll (I'm selling this well, aren't I? :D).

If you just measure round the sproglet's leg that'll give you how wide it'll need to be; and measuring how long her leg is will give you the length of the knit.

If you aren't sure of what stitches to uses, then I'd do a few rows of rib at the top and bottom and knit everything in between - the rib will hold the leg warmers - and it'll stop them curling up...

Hope that helps.

Sorry meant to add this one in on my original message!

Don't give up! If you can do scarves and squares, then you can knit. Everything else is just practice.... can your mum help? Sometimes it's easier to learn things face to face.

And remember to have fun - if you can't laugh at your mistakes yet, then make more mistakes until you can!;)

Thank you Nora I may well try that.... I'll try not to give up. I'm thinking of asking for some books, wool & needles for Christmas :D

Hello my dear - I am Lou - founder of Loving Hands the charity knitting group - I have set up a knit to order service to raise some money for our postage fund so would be very happy to create an aran for you - you could select your own pattern and colour and I would knit it up for you to your measurements ;0) If you would like to find out more my email address is charityknitters@yahoo.co.uk I certainly wouldnt be charging £175 for it ;0)
• Hi all
I was wondering if someone could point me to easy sock patterns for DK weight and Aran weight wools?
I'm done quite a bit of knitting, but somehow socks always defeat me.
Thanks in advance - and have a nice Sunday. x

I would certainly recommend Silvers Sock Class for knitting socks of all weights. Straight forward and easy to follow :D

Another jumper - for middle Grandson this time

You might have to be prepared to pay quite a lot for it (unless you can find someone willing to do it at a loss, or as a hobby and only take payment for the yarn). Good quality yarn alone would set someone back quite a bit, and then Aran takes even experienced knitters a while to knit. Perhaps look on e-bay or in charity shops, if you don't mind something second hand, to see how you like the feel of wearing it (aran can be quite thick/heavy and some higher percent wool yarns can be scratchy) before paying a lot to someone to make you one?

Ravelry?
Speaking from experience, socks thicker in anything thicker than DK are most suited for wellies, bed socks etc. For wearing with standard shoes I'd aim for 4ply, or 6ply if you really cannot stand the thinness of 4ply.
