Naff knitter here ladies I need a bit of help please??

I bought a few balls of wool here and there and now have a fair pile I need to use..I wanted to make like a neck muff thingy, not a cowl as I say I'm a naff knitter so simple is best for me I'm afraid :o

I have some chenile type wool I got in a big pack from Abakhan, some lovely crofters chunky, and big softie think its called from Kemps (chunky knits quick right? lol)

Any suggestions how I go about figuring how many stitches/needle sizes please should I just wrap a tape measure round my neck and do a tension square?

I can't get on with scarves and just need a little tube for my neck to keep draughts out while dogwalking if that makes sense?
Thanks in advance for any tips :D

Don't forget that it needs to be big enough to go over your head (and chenille is not very stretchy) or you could do a short, straight bit of knitting with a button to do it up round the neck ?

As to needle size, have a look on the ball bands of the various yarns you've got and they should suggest a needle size. Is there much difference (if any) of the suggested sizes ?

I haven't knitted for about 20 years, but I bought this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110871657318?var=410107902824&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_1826wt_885 pattern from Ebay recently and started again.

I'm knitting it in Paton's FAB in black as the main colour, with a lovely rainbow coloured yarn for the pattern, and I'm using white between the two.

Day 3 and i'm just about to start inserting the first pocket....
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

Not knitting.... not yet anyway.....my first attempt at spinning. The OH is baffled as to why I'm leaping up and down with excitement.

That is brilliant. I would be jumping up and down as well :j
  • How brilliant to find this thread. I started knitting again after many many years. In the spirit of the forum, has anyone here tried the aran yarn from Aldi? I believe it is this one: http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/special_buys3_26843.htm

I would like to get it in green because my son is mad about green :D

    All opinions welcome! :A

Dyeing Rowan Wool Have any knitters dyed wool? I knitted a cardi a couple of years ago with Rowan wool but I don't like the colour (a beige "rich tea biscuit" coolour) and haven't worn it. I'm annoyed that it's a waste of v v expensive wool, so I've bought a dylon dye today (a handwash dye, it says it is suitable for wool), but I'm a bit apprehensive about using it- the thought of wrecking £60/70 worth of wool is making me feel a bit sick! (Its Rowan Big Wool- 100% Merino)
