not expert by any means but never seen this on a pattern before. was going to just ignore it and carry on with st st but cant even tell if during the line you lose or gain any stitches. this is how pattern goes maybe someone can help, it goes like this

cast on 296 sts with 4 1/2 circular needles
    round 1-7 knit
    round 8 *(k5,p3-pkp)
    round 9-15 knit
    round 16 k1,p3tog-pkp, *k5,p3-pkp; rep from * to last 4 sts, k4

obviously it is row 8 and 16 that i am having a problem and wanted to ask if i could just knit the same as the other rows, also as i dont have acceass to a circular needle for time being could i not just use a normal set of needles?

hope some one comes along that can help, thank you

am back again with more questions about this pattern :o if it wasnt bad enough that i dont know if i have enough wool to finish iy i am now having problems getting the correct needle size. i have tried rolling it along side a 50g ball of other wool to try and work along the thought that if it unravels alongside a 50g ball of siilar wool i will have reached a 50g ball of the one i am going to do and i have done this with 4x 50g and there was alot over, so although not an ideal method it may work. if it did the needle problem i have is i only have very long 4mm straight needles or 80cm circular needles in a 4mm size can i and which would be the best needle to use if all that is available with the above info on pattern, which would be best please?

I have some daft knitting questions! :o

How do you know how much wool to leave for casting on? I seem to end up running out and having to start over or wasting loads.

I am looking at a knitting pattern for a blanket (knitted in squares) and it says to knit into the first stitch. What does that mean?

What is the difference between YF and YRN?

Any help welcomed! I am a beginner trying to move onto something more complicated than dishcloths and basic scarves!

    Hi
Haven't got much energy today, so I'll just answer your first question - and it's not daft :)

I assume that you're talking about a long tailed cast on ? What I do, if it's quite a few stitches to cast on, is to cast on 10 stitches, then undo them and measure the amount of 'tail' that this uses and then multiply up.
Eg if 10 sts uses 8cm, and you need to cast on 100 sts, then the tail needs to be 80cm plus a little bit.

I tend to see how many stitches the pattern calls for e.g. 10 stitches and measure 1cm of wool per stitch plus probably half again e.g. 15cm. This can be a bit hit and miss depending on the size of needle but tend to only do the long tail method when knitting socks.

I can't see where you've given us the name of this pattern. Did I miss it or is there a link to the pattern online?

Have you tried knitting a tension square to see if the 4mm needles will give you the right result? Although patterns give a recommended needle size, many people need to go up or down a size depending on how tight or loose they knit. Tension (or gauge in USA patterns) measurements are usually at the start of the pattern.

Are you trying to find out how much wool you have in metres/yards? When I was trying to work out how much wool I had in an unlabelled ball I weighed some first. If you have an accurate/digital kitchen scale then weigh out 1gram of the wool, measure the length of that and multiply by 50 to get yard/meterage for 50g eg 1gram wool measures 1.73m = 86.5m total per ball.

Please post the name of the pattern or a link to it if it is online, it will be much easier to give advice if we can see the details. Also, if you know the name of the wool you are using, we can get more info for that.

Mavisangelica; Your knitted Bolt is lovely.

    Orkney; Great socks, as usual.

Drinkuppretty; Gorgeous colours on the fingerless gloves. They have a nice 'glow' to them that will look fab when the colder weather comes.
