It is really easy, just knits, purls and slip stitches.

that looks so great orkney sometimes (like the last 30 years or so) feel i will never get the hang of this. i did try the stitches it asked me to do just on a random set of stitches but it even looks weird on the needle although i know what you mean about not so daunting when you first start. this is not one of these, just the p 3 together bit then k and p....also do not own any circular needles and wont be able to get any for at least a week so was hoping could do in straight needles they are quite long bamboo ones from kath kidson. but if it will ruin pattern i guess i will have to get some patience. problem is have set mind to giving hand made gifts for family for both xmas and birthday and each project i have chosen there is a problem starting, wrong needles, wrong size needles, not enough wool, wrong colour etc i want to scream

The pattern on that sock does look weird at first, a do a lot of patterns, you need to knit a few rows first. I knit socks so I buy sock yarn, but I also have odd wools in my stash that I have to search hard to fit a pattern to suit the amount, thickness etc. I see it as a fun challenge though :)

    Hi
I feel inspired by OrkneyStar's gorgeous socks to try a sock pattern for dd or ds, I have never tried socks, could anyone recommend a really basic pattern for children.
    Thanks so much x

To be honest I have struggled to find a decent one online or elsewhere and have ended up making it up a bit. What you could do id find a 'sock generator' pattern on ravelry (search under sock recipe or sock generator or something) and select to fit a child, that way you will be able to make a sock designed to fit your child's specific measurements. I basically do partly that/partly by eye. If it is any help my son, aged 5, size toddler 9.5F shoe needs approx 48 ish stitches with 4 ply sock yarn.

Ooh thanks so much I didn't even know there was a sock generator!!! Just had a play on Ravelry to see how it works. My son is also 5 but a size 11 so a weeny bit bigger but I think I can work out what to do now.

    Thanks ever so xx
