it is still £2.50.. I just placed 1000 balls of wool in the basket (total £4700 lol) and it was still £2.50

I did once snag an absolute bargain on ebay, a lot of 10 balls of Big Wool for a ridiculously cheap £39, but looking there today, there's not much in the way of real bargains. I need to check far more often, I think (not to mention not expecting such a great bargain a second time around!). One of the reasons my cardigan is so very warm is that it's 100% merino, so while I don't mind knitting wool mixes (I've knitted with all sorts!), I'm quite keen to get as close as possible to that. Fussy, me?
I'd never come across Kemps, but had a peek there just now, and they do seem to have some very well priced clearance yarns, so thanks for that! I've bought yarns online before, but generally the odd skein of hand dyed stuff for shawls and scarves etc, so it's nice to have places to go for more mainstream yarns.
I've never even thought of looking in charity shops - we have heaps very close by, so it must be worth a look, I would think.
So glad I found this thread
A few Rowan yarns at Kemps at the moment:

Thanks for that everyone - I've looked in John Lewis but found it really expensive (but maybe that's the normal price now) I'll try the barras - never even thought of there, d'oh why didn't I think of Hobbycraft
The Craft and Creative Stitches exhibition is on at the SECC between 3rd and 6th March. There are several wool stands and Black Sheep (online traders ) have a huge stall where you can delve into packs of wool knee high. I just love it - WOOL HEAVEN !!!Debt free - Mortgage free - Work free ( in that order)

One of the ways I can afford wool is that I get vouchers for my local wool shop bought for my birthday or christmas. Friends and family always know what to buy me and I really appreciate the vouchers.
Finally finished my latest project (a pressie for my mother-in-law). This is a Rowan pattern knitting in 2 ply, undyed Shetland wool bought from a lady who has sheep in my village.

Oh spider that is really beautiful, I do admire your skill. I have tried lace work but I got in such a mess I ended up in tears ripping it all back, so now I'm back on socks, hats and toys. Seeing that makes me want to try again though!Oh dear, here we go again.0

Spider in the Bath - what a beautiful shawl. I would love to do something like that, but would end up being interrupted and losing my place. Well done you! :T0
