Pilling is when a fabric gets small balls on it after wearing/washing.
I really wasn't having a go at anyone - nor was not being "encouraging". On this thread I also like to encourage other knitters.
Ok, fair enough, but read your post back in the shoes of someone who can, at the moment, only afford acrylic or acrylic blends*. I just thought it was a bit of a sweeping statement....lets agree to differ though ?
As for 'pilling'- I just say 'going all bobbly', lol ;).

(* I am not meaning me, or anyone in particular, just a random, and possibly new, knitter).

Have we all seen MSE's offer to get your hands on a free copy of Knitting for Dummies? From what I remember, having seen it in a bookshop some while ago, it's quite comprehensive and even more experienced knitters may still find it useful!
Thanks for the heads up on this....I had not seen it :D.

(I've knitted with all sorts!), I'm quite keen to get as close as possible to that. Fussy, me? ;)
No not fussy, I agree, that if you really like a wool (and have used it before etc) then go for it.....save those pennies lol, and keep an eye on the sales too..... best of luck!
I knitted my son a jumper recently, wanted the proper wool the pattern stated and it did cost a lot, but I knew that substituting a cheaper wool would just not give the result I wanted, despite the lady in the shop stressing just how much it would cost! x

PS I think the Lidl yarns on offer this time are mostly acrylic, there may be a cotton one too ;).

Yes - price puts me off too, but trouble is, if we buy and use cheap acrylic/wool mix yarn it looks awful in no time and pills up. I know it's not always possible, but I buy yarn in charity shops when I can and have even started buying wool hand-knits in charity shops and unpicking them!
Otherwise try looking for Rowan on Ebay? Trouble is, sellers' postage rates mostly make it more expensive than going to a shop!

One of the cheapest online stores is Dianne's Knitting Yarns (find it on google) and they have a one off delivery charge (£2,50 last time I used it) no matter how much wool you order.

  • If any of you live in or around Newark, Notts, there is a charity shop, thinks it's Age Uk, opposite Boyes, and they have a huge selection of Wendy wools at £1.25 a ball. They were all in a wool shop rack, so not sure if this is going to be a regular item, but looked good quality.

Hello again - Have any of you bought the wool from Lidl's today, it's just I was gonna pick some up on my way home from work. I was thinking of knitting gloves, scarves and hats with it?

Thanks for all the links to the online wool shops - I'm having a nightmare trying to find a wool shop near me. There used to be one's in Glasgow but they've all closed - in fact the last proper wool shop I managed to find was in Kirkcaldy. If anyone can point me in the direction of one I would be grateful - I like to be able to feel the wool cos some of the blends give me the heebies - don't like the feel of them :rotfl:

Have you tried Hobbycraft at the Fort ? They have some Sirdar, Rowan, Regia etc. There used to also be Ritas (think that is name) at the barra's and also John Lewis did do some wool too.
I have avoided the lidl wool as I don't need any more acrylic or cotton just now, wanting to get DS a new bed so keeping money toward that. It is a good chance to get some cheap acrylics though if you need them!
    xx

    Orkney, thats Chuckles Baby Chunky.
It's acrylic, but nice and soft and will last as long as it fits him!

Thanks for that everyone - I've looked in John Lewis but found it really expensive (but maybe that's the normal price now) I'll try the barras - never even thought of there, d'oh why didn't I think of Hobbycraft

Cool, I think acrylic is often the best choice for baby things, as it is so easy to wash and can be really soft too! Chuckles is such a great name for a baby wool too don't you think ? ;)
