Hello all you lovely knitters!
wheres the best place to start if a total newbie wants to learn to knit, i know NOTHING. All i know is i love vintage knitwear and patterns are easier to find than the real thing.
I know knitwear would be advanced, but id love to start off somewhere....!DFW - Debt Free Date July 2013, LBM Oct 2011

Hi Paula. youtube have some great tutorials. When I was learning many moons ago it helped that I read through knitting books aimed at children
Sounds mad but they are so basic and once you've mastered the basic stitches you are well on your way. Also have a look in your local library, there should be loads of books on learning to knit, if not they can sometimes order them in for you.
Hope that helps

I also use knitpro wooden needles - having tried them I wouldn't use anything else if I could help it. I use the interchangeable points and my only problem is that I haven't found the tips in the smaller sizes. They are expensive, though , but I don't regret the investment.
They don't make the Knitpro right down into the very small needle-sizes, because the tips simply wouldn't be wide enough to accomodate the joining mechanism. You are right about the wooden tips being gorgeous though :-)0 -
Haven't come across this problem, but have you checked the colour and lot numbers to make sure they are the same?

I havent come across interchangeable needles - the ones I have are in pack ranging from 2.00 - 3.25. Quite expensive at the time but I reckoned it was worth it.
The colours are correct - it is just the sequencing of the patterning that seems out of sync but when I looked at sock patterns on Ravelry-I saw some others that were also out of sync so that explains it. I must admit that all my other pairs were ok so maybe I was just unlucky with these ones.
Thanks for answering tho- love to see where you got your needles from.:j0 -

Aah - never thought of that. I have the tips down to 3mm but would like to go down to 2mm as I occasionally like the challenge of knitting something very fine.I havent come across interchangeable needles - the ones I have are in pack ranging from 2.00 - 3.25. Mmmm - now you say that I remember seeing photos of socks where they actually look quite different - particularly in yarns with quite long colour changes.
I got my interchangeables from Bicester Wools. I find their prices reasonable, customer service excellent and their philosophy is to run the sort of business they would like to buy from. Postage rates are a genuine reflection of the costs involved. On the down side they don't have a secure site so I generally find what I'm looking for on their website and then phone to check they have it in stock (the other downside is that they don't update the website with stock levels, but having said that so far everything I have asked for they have had in stock) and they will then quote a price for p&p. The focus of the business is the shop rather than the web.
I was pointed in their direction by a friend who has become a friend of the owner through visiting the shop. When I did a search for the knitpro needles they came up with the cheapest price and having had the recommendation I gave them a try and was very pleased.

You can buy Knitpro fixed circulars. I have most of the very small sizes with long cables, for making socks two-at-a-time. Mine are metal, but the wooden ones also go down to 2mm.0 -

It could be you've lost the thanks buttons because you aren't signed in. It took me a while to puzzle this one out as I don't sign out but sometimes the computer seems to do it for me.
Computers - don't you just love them when they behave themselves and hate them when they don't!!!

Blueberrypie Thanks for your help - I was thinking along the lines of fair isle although even when I do stripes it's a bit of a nightmare. I end up with everything tight and a dog's dinner at the back. I've got quite a few patterns (like spider's skull and cross bones picture) that I would really like to knit but anytime I need to use more than one colour it's a disaster
La escocesa Thanks for the link - another one bookmarked
Spider in the bathFantastic makes - I love the jumper with the cable at the top - gorgeous.
mothership your books look brilliant0
