Can any of you experienced knitters help me?
I downloaded and printed off line, a pattern for a beautiful lacy mohair-type shrug that I know would be loved by my granddaughter...so today I went into our local wool shop for the materials and pins.
Although the advice by the compiler of the pattern was to use any yarn that recommends a 4mm pin...the pattern itself says to use a 9mm pin for the body of the shrug, and a 5.5mm circular pin for the welts...admittedly the lacy pattern is very open, but the shopkeeper frowned and said she doubted it would work. The picture of the finished garment looks beautiful.
I am sitting here just looking at it, afraid to start, as I don't want to waste the yarn...I don't think mohair type yarn would unravel very easily if I find it to be wrong.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
    Thanks, Jackie. ;)

Could you give us a link to the pattern? It would be easier to advise you if we see it. Thanks

    LOL Next question!!!!
Can anyone tell me how to post a link. I have only ever done 'copy & paste, and I think it might be too big to do that.
    Thanks again, :D

Open the page you want and go to the very top of the screen. For example if it was this page, it says

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/718513

highlight, right click on it to copy then paste it into your post.

There is a fancier way of replacing the link with a single word but I've not learned that yet.:)

    This one, yes?

If you have bought the recommended weight of yarn then I don't see why 'it wouldn't work'. The recommended yarns are aran weight and the 5.5mm needles are the recopmmended size. With the smaller needles you will get the denser fabric needed for the rib but then you need large needles to produce the lace pattern. If the needles aren't big enough the lace pattern will be lost and there will be no contrast.

The pattern says 400m of yarn - do you have enough extra to maybe do a small square with some ribbing and maybe a couple of pattern repeats just to give yourself some confidence?

ETA the link isn't on the page of the website, it's the address bar at the top of your browser window. So on this page look at the very top of your computer screen and the address bar is the bit with the tiny pic and then http://

Thank you so much...final question on this one ( I think!!) The pattern asks for 'removable stitch markers'. Are there special stitch markers, or do they mean a length of contrasting coloured yarn, as I have always used before?

You can buy stitch markers (fancy or plain) but can just use contrasting yarn- which I prefer despite buying stitch markers in 3 colours/sizes!

Thank you Careful with that Axe - I was trying to p7 (because it was p6 on the previous purl row) and k8 (because it was k7 on the previous knit row)! The heel started off in the middle and then veered sharply to the right! Now that I see it it is dead obvious - I actually feel a bit silly for even posting, so well done you! :T

Your prize is knowing that you are very clever and helped a complete numpty in her hour of need - don't go too far in case I need you again! :)

I was hoping to get you working on some yarn untangling too :p
I was complete guess work based on the short row cushion I did. It takes some concentration doesn't it!
