  • I get excited too when my knitting mag comes every month.:) My dd gave me a subscription to Prima mag every month for a year as my Mothers Day gift and I love it so much. Simple pleasures, with a cuppa, love it:)

  • Hi all:) Got my parcel this morning from modern knitting, so well pleased with that. I bought wool, and a sock pattern and am going to start knitting my dd a pair of socks to put in with her other Christmas presents. She loves socks and thought it would be nice to knit a pair for her, as a wee surprise. I know she will appreciate them. Lovely day here, not as cold and sunny, so off to hang out my washing I think:)

  • I may have splurged a bit on yarn yesterday because I went in a shop I'd never been in before and that I doubt I'll visit again any time soon...oh my! It's GORGEOUS stuff though and as I'm not allowed to drink and I don't smoke I suppose my little addiction is allowed now and then. Still the yarn diet is back on now until I've knit through twice as many balls of yarn as I bought yesterday (and I'm not revealing how many that is!!)

    Hi All
I was going to add this to the existing knitters thread but wasn't sure of the ettiquette of just barging in there :o
I would LOVE to knit a pair of socks for myself (thick warm socks are one of my favourite things) and in an attempt to keep myself busy (I have my leg in a cast for 4 more weeks - boo!) I thought that this might do that and cheer me up.
I would descrive myself as beginner level (I have just finished a Debbie Bliss knitted bunny so I can cope with basic patterns).
Can anyone recommend an easy pattern?
Any suggestions as to whether it's easier to work with several double ended needles or a circular one? Best yarn (can't be too expensive!)?
Oh yes, and I would need to be able to buy everything I need on line!!
    Thanks
    Claire

Knitty has an excellent basic sock pattern including a mini-sock you make for practise. (Mini-socks in Christmassy colours make lovely tree decrations or can be used to wrap a special but tiny present!)

Apart from baking, this is my other obsession - I've churned out tons of socks and given them away as presents :D

I learned from THIS fantastic tutorial. It has lots of clear photos and step by step instructions, it really is brilliant.

Lidl do nice sock yarn every so often, but if you want it immediately then Opal and Regia have nice sock yarn. You could get it online from any supplier (I used to use Angel Yarns and also ebay). There are some lovely self-striping yarns you can get, and none of them are really very expensive. You probably want to go on the basis that one 50g ball = one sock (although if you don't make them too long, three balls might do four socks, i.e. two pairs).

I always use bamboo double pointed needles, and that's what the tutorial uses. I know lots of people like circular needles, and there's a way you can use two long circular needles to knit two socks at once (it's called the magic loop method) but I've never even tried it, I'm quite happy to do one at a time :D

Hope this helps, if you need any more info let me know and I will bore you to tears talking about knitting socks :)
