  • I have a problem so I'm hoping someone can help me.

When I knit in the round using DPNs sometimes the yarn on the first stitch of a needle gets stretched and you can notice this in the fabric. I pull the yarn tight when moving from one needle to another but it seems that once this problem happens it is impossible to get rid of it and continues down the length of the knitting. I can get round this by constantly moving stitches from one needle to another but this is annoying and gets difficult when trying to follow a pattern.

Any tips or tricks to avoid this?
  • Hi lynseydee :) I subscribe to Lets Knit as well, and I really like it. I think the patterns are great and as you said there is always a wee gift each month with it. i am currently knitting a little cardigan from it and enjoying it. My dh is now doing night shift at work so every night I sit down at 7 with my cuppa and out come the needles :)

You could try using the join on thread to knit the first two stitches with the yarn which gives a secure base( i.e. the first two stitches would have 2 strands which you would then `lose` on the next row. Hope that makes sense.
  • Hi thifty I have only ever bought Lets Knit knitting mag, and like it very much. I have been a fan of Debbie Bliss books for children's knits. Hopefully someone will post here about a good reference book for you. Best wishes Margaret :) p.s Just remembered a book I have here, just came across it. It is called " how to knit" The definitive knitting course, complete with step by step techniques, stitch libraries and projects for your home and family by Debbie Bliss. It is a lovely helpful book and I have knit a few things from it, loads of help there.

Hi do you mean on the first row? What I often do is knit a few rows flat and then join up to make it more secure but it still happens aaarghh

The problem occurs not because the first stitch is stretched, but because there is an extra bit of yarn between the last stitch on the previous needle and the first stitch on the new one. So what you need to do is remove that extra bit of yarn.

When you have knit the first stitch on the next needle, pull the working yarn tight. Hold it quite firmly as you knit the second stitch and then pull it tight again. Give it a good tug. The two stitches in combination will hold the yarn firmly and stop it from pulling out to create that extra bit between the two needles.

It sounds simple, but it really works :-)

I was thinking of subscribing - partly for the mag, partly for the freebies :-D

Can anyone tell me what the freebies have been for the last few months? I see that the current issue comes with a biggish-size circular needle (not sure I'll ever use that).
  • I like Let's knit magazine. you do seem to get a lot of free needles, that doesn't bother me as I always have so many UFOs on needles I need all I can get. :o

sometimes you can be lucky and get 3 for £3 trial subscriptions, but I can't find any just now.

I'm thinking of subscribing to Simply Knitting using my Tesco vouchers £16.50 worth of vouchers for the year!
  • Thrifty - I have the stitch' n b!tch book by Debbie Stoller. Shes done a few different books, but The Knitters Handbook one is probably the most useful in terms of learning to knit. Theres quite a few patterns in there aswell!

I also have Stitch n B!itch nation by Debbie Stoller which is good aswell..have a look on amazon, I think they're quite cheap

I'm just coming to the end of my second year's subscription to this thanks to Mr T, and I've just sent off the form to renew again. I thinks it's a really good mag, and it's another one that gives you a freebie every month. ;)
Oh dear, here we go again.
