  • I saw that jumper in Let's Knit and agree it's lovely. Cabling isn't difficult, you just knit the stitches in a different order :) you will need a spare needle to hold the stitches you aren't using but if you have any double pointed needles those would do, even a safety pin as you can just slip the stitches back onto the needle when you want to knit them. There are also instructions online for how to cable without a cable needle if you do a quick google search.

I got quite a bit more of my circle sock knit whilst waiting for my car at the garage. I've got 19 rounds to do now and then I just need to graft the toe and I'm excited to get a project finished! I've been knitting on these socks for ages. My next pair are for my friend at work's daughter. She said she'd pay me to do them but I'm just going to take the cost of the wool as I like her and the daughter and she only has small feet so it's no trouble to knit her some socks!! I've also been asked to knit 2 baby hats if I have time which again I don't mind doing, baby stuff doesn't take any time at all really.

Nuala....try 'theyarnemporium.ie' for wool....just found it yesterday and am very impressed with range available....based in D12. Just have to convince myself that I DO NOT NEED any of the lovely Kerry woolen mills stuff they have relatively cheaply.

I do have two different shades of purple going on, but I don't care. :p

As Lambanana says the cabling is really quite easy once you get going. This is only my second project. :o
  • That looks amazing!! I hope I find it easy, I have a tendancy for over complicating things so we'll see! I just managed to buy 2 cable needles from ebay for £1 plus 75p postage so will have to wait til those arrive to give it a try! There's a pattern for a draught excluder in LK so I might try that to get a feel for cabling before I start on the jumper! There's actually loads of patterns in LK that I wanna do, the baby coat is lovely, very tempted to do two of those for my boys (even tho DH hates me dressing them the same lol!). DH also found me some Raggy Dolls patterns online so DS2 is getting a Sadsack, Princess and Back to Front for his birthday! DH is away from next week for 3 weeks so I'll have plenty of spare evenings to get some knitting done!

Is this to be a scarf kezbabybabe ? This is really lovely.
Yummymummy:I first started getting to grips with cable needles doing baby items for my niece and nephew years ago. Got to admit I have not 'cabled' for a while but it is very satisfying imho! The only downside is if you actually do a C4F instead of a C4B or vice versa (in other words put it at the back instead of the front or vice versa), meaning a cable faces the wrong way! A friend of mine once told me her mum made her an Aran type sweater when she was wee, noticed one cable the wrong way at the bottom and insisted on re-doing the whole side! Some more complicated aran patterns will have cable facing more than one way in a row- avoid those when just starting!! x

Well I have finished the second glove while DS was at nursery (although was a good girl and hung up washing, put laundry away and washed dishes BEFORE I allowed myself to get the pins out!)- still have a whole ball left, so it worked out at 1 ball of Regia (50g)=£3.95 for a pair of adult ladies gloves- pretty good really!
Will post a proper pic once they are washed and pressed lightly!
    Bye for now folks x

Ohh thanks a mill Marie!:T Will have a look now ... and drool for a bit! There's another place in D12 called Springwools - not sure their prices are great but they had a good selection and sometimes it's nice to actually see the yarn. Very hard to walk away from without spending anything though! Good luck resisting the Kerry Woolen Mills wool ... especially if it is a bargain! :D
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Hi everyone, I've had to take a break from the fireman sam jumper as it's just not going right. The part where the picture is keeps going really tight and there's holes in it each time i change colours so I'm going to seek out someone who can show me how to do it properly!
I bought Let's Knit today and think it suits me a lot better than Simply Knitting as it seems to be more for a beginner! I love one of the jumpers in there but it requires Aran wool and I don't have any of this -does anyone know the cheapest place to buy it or a cheaper alternative. I really love knitting but can't justify spending too much at the moment!!

    If you`ve got a B & M store near you they have araan wool at £3.99 for a 400gr ball :D
  • I've lurked on this thread for a while now and wondered if I could ask for some help.
I'm trying to find a pattern and am having no joy it's Rowan Toy Knitting Pattern-3 dangle leg chickens-hens.
I found it by chance and would love to have a go but now when I google even the name I cannot find them again. I've tried ebay aswell but had no joy.
Do any of you have any suggestions as to where to look to buy it from?

Were the dangly legged chickens these ones?

They were in a Simply Knitting supplement not all that long ago --- there may be one going on Ebay or someone may have a copy they're not using/need?

I work on an instruction at a time, if I look at the whole pattern I get a bit overwhelmed too, but I also have my mum on hand to help out.

It's a comfort wrap, the pictures a bit deceiving, but it's about 2ft by 4ft (at a guess :o) at the moment and I've still got just under half left to go. The sort of thing you would have over your shoulders when reading I think.
