I have finished the first of the 4 needle socks, I have to do the other one, but I think all socks will be knitted on 2 needles from now on, I am not sure I have done it correctly but it looks ok!!!

When I clicked on the Rav link and looked at the triangular version I recognised the shawl, I remember Stephanie Pearl-McPhee (yarnharlot) knitting it and blogging about it :D

My sock is half way through the foot, I can't imagine doing socks on 2 needles, I couldn't be bothered to sew it up!

I don't often use 4/5 needles these days - mostly I use circulars, and Magic Loop for anything small (like a sock). Might be worth giving that a go.

There are a few videos on-line which demonstrate it better than I can tell you in words, but I'll have a go. Basically you use a long circular needle - imagine following the circular needle from one tip, along the cable, to the other tip. You'd have the item you're knitting - a circular one (of course) - sort of flattened into two halves, just like a flattened sock. On the tip of your needle is one half, then you've a big loop of cable, then the other half of your item, then another big loop of cable (going out in the opposite direction), then the other tip of your needle. You knit from one needle onto the other, then pull the cable through your stitches to bring the other half of your item to the tips, knit that, then pull the cable through so the first lot of stitches are at the tip again, and so on.

It's just like using a circular needle in the usual way except that you have loops of cable sticking out so that the cable doesn't need to be the right length for the item you're knitting. Do have a look at the videos - once you get your head around how it works, it really is simple to use, and you'll find yourself using it for all sorts of things. I knit almost all my socks on Magic Loop now, two of them at a time, and use it for things like hats etc where a very short cable would otherwise be required (or double-pointed needles).
