I've been lucky enough to get a large quantity of Colinette yarn Point 5 very cheaply - can anyone direct me to patterns that don't cost a fortune. I'd like to make a jumper and perhaps some scarves. Think I have enough for two jumpers and quite a few scarves. I'm not sure enough of what I'm doing to try to convert other patterns. I'd be grateful for any advice.

    Hello Everyone

Can I just ask you all where you purchase your wool from?

I've not knitted anything for years (used to knit Arrans, and lots of stuff) but lately not did anything but scarves!

My daughter really likes the chunky knit cardies that are around at the moment, but the one I have a pattern for would cost around £60!

I just wondered where you all got your wool from, as it's not cheap, is it?

I usually get mine from eBay, bootsales or our local Freecycle group also runs a Flog it/Swap it service. When ever I see any wool I buy it then think about what I can make from it later.

From Kemps for most stuff, from Jamiesons of Shetland for pure wool.

I don't live far from Kemps so tend to use them exclusively - their prices are very competitive: http://www.kempswoolshop.com/?gclid=CMm_-ImYkJMCFQZOMAodJGu_Yg

I have tried to knit this pattern in the 2 ply laceweight I bought but because I keep going wrong and can't work out where abouts (and even if I could I was having trouble unpicking the stitches) I have decided I am going to try knitting it in a 4 ply instead.

Can anyone suggest which size needles I should go for as the pattern currently states 4mm but if I'm knitting it in a thicker yarn I want the lace effect to still show.

I'm a complete novice with things like this so would appreciate any help at all.

If you are using 4mm needles, usually used for DK ie 8ply, when knitting with 2 ply, then I would assume that you would use 4.5mm needles, usually used for aran or 12 ply, when knitting with 4 ply.

But perhaps someone better than me at mathematics can see a different ratio that needs to me followed? What we really need is someone who can work out a formula or equation to express the relationship between needle size and yarn, but I'm afraid that that is beyond me!

I'm not good at that kind of stuff but I'd try it in a 5 first because a 4 might be too close to see much difference ? I just try things then rip out then try again etc until I get what I want it to be.
    :D Takes patience though !
