arghhhh....i've spent the last 3 evenings trying to unravel a skein of yarn I dropped and it's all tangled :( it consists of 3 strands just twisted together. It's a lovely yarn and quite expensive so I have to be able to make it into a ball. Does anyone have any tips? I'm thinking of getting some scissors out

thats the wool, but not a great range of colours
and thanks to appolonia i googled the company as well as looking on this site, and they have a really bad reputation.
anybody know of anywhere else, looking for any shade pink/red, only need 3 balls, as its for a pair of mittens

MCA direct have some of this wool left not many balls but there may be enough left for you to finish your mittens, they had a colour called cranberry and a few different ones.

Are you a member of Ravelry? If so, go to the group called 'Knot a Problem' and you will find that the people there love to untangle yarn! There is lots of advice and tips there. Or you can click on 'detanglers by location' and under UK there is a list of all the people who will gladly deal with it for you.

One of the strangest tips I've heard of is for untangling mohair type yarn. Leaving it in the freezer for a while stops it sticking to itself. Not much use if your yarn isn't mohair, but might be useful some other time!

Palema - I get DPNs at 16" or 40cm length, from Jamiesons in Shetland. Stainless steel and brilliant needles.
Aesha, knit it as it is, its wonderfully easy to knit and will make your hands all nice and soft. Then wash the oils out.
Meanmarie, try Jamieson & Smith up in Lerwick, they sell shetland wool with the oil still in.

Has anybody had any problems with Wendy Happy 4 ply sock yarn? I've just started a pair of socks with it and it's driving me mad the way it splits all the time. Could be because it's made from bamboo. It's a shame because it works up in lovely regular bright stripes (mine is red & blue) and it's really lovely and soft, but working with it is a real pain. I'm hoping the result will be worth the hassle!
Oh dear, here we go again.

Aeshna...about a hundred years ago when I was young, it was possible to buy 'oiled' or natural wool, it had been spun without any treatment to take the natural oil out....I wonder is that what you have got? If so the thing to do is knit it as it is, the oil will come out gradually as you wash the garment....be warned that you will have very blackened hands while you are knitting but they will be very soft due to the oil in the wool...good luck.
Would love to know where you got the wool as I would love to get some, although unfortunately the high postage costs from UK make things very expensive to import.

    Marie

Big thanks to Marie and Mardatha for their advice on my yummy yarn! The fact that it was untreated was a big factor in my absolute want to have this wool! My main concern was the smell issue, but I'm sure that will soon disappear, can't wait to get started!

Marie, I actually got this wool on eBay, a lovely 900g cone for £13.00 which I thought was a pretty good deal. The wool is from JC Rennie - having had a look at their website, they have a list of 'Yarn Agents' who are located all over the world, assuming you're not here in the UK. The site is pretty out of date, so I'm not sure how accurate it would be, but worth a look there and on eBay I'd suggest!

    Thanks again!

i loved the results from the happy sock yarn, but i do agree with you, because its bamboo it does tend to split
