Can someone help me please! I'm only just learning to knit so be gentle with me
I'm at the end of my first piece and the pattern says to end with a row of "ws" stitch, could someone tell me what this is please? Thanks!

It's wrong side. rs would be right side. Are you knitting stocking stitch (one row of knit, one row of purl, repeat over and over)? If so, you probably need to finish on a purl row.0

Yes that's right, one row purl one row knit. A woman at work is helping me but she is away all week and I want to get it finished so I can move onto my next piece!
Does it make a difference which row I started with? I can check that when I get home.
Also, it says that I should knit 27cms, should this include the stitches on the needle or measure from the top of the actual knitting (hope that makes sense)
Thank you!Sometimes you have to go throughthe rain to get to therainbow0 -
No, it shouldn't make a difference which row you started with. Just make sure you know which side is "out" if you see what I mean. Whichever side will be the outside on the finished item is the right side, or "rs" in the pattern.
27cm is from the top to the bottom of the actual knitting, don't count the stitches on the needle.
I've just decided I want to knit a lacy scarf for a workmate's Christmas present. I'm at home today because of the snow, so I have the rest of today, plus tomorrow evening, to get a whole scarf knitted. Wonder if I could do it in time...0 -
Am I the only person in the world who just can't get to grips with knitting in the round? I have tried using dpns of several different sizes (yes I know the principle is the same but I thought it would be easier with bigger ones!) but it all seems terrribly difficult and tight and I end up with what looks like little ladders where the needles meet and I just get all in a mess and can't hold it properly. I'm a reasonably experienced knitter and this failure is SOOOO shaming!
I'd love to join the sock revolution but don't like the idea of socks with seams in, and I'm sure if everyone else can manage it I should be able to.
So why cant I?Oh dear, here we go again.0 -
Maybe you're thinking about it too much? It really is just the same as using two needles, and the other needles are just for holding the stitches you're not currently working on.
I used to be terrified of dpns until I found this tutorial online. It's absolutely fantastic with really clear, detailed photos, and I reckon it's foolproof. Give it a try. When you get used to them, socks are really addictive and you can churn them out while you watch TV.0 -
That looks like a very straightforward tutorial, thanks for posting angeltreats. Like you say, maybe I need to relax - I get more and more angry with myself when I can't do it and however hard I try the other needles get in the way. Your point about dealing with it 2 needles at a time makes sense.
I will definitely have another go (so you might be subjected to the occasional rant on here).
Thanks again.

I have just started knitting again. It must be about 17 years since I did any. My 4 sons are all in their twenties now but when they were growing up I knitted all of their baby cardis jumpers etc. I churned out Arans for lots of family members and always had knitting on the go.
I have 2 grandchildren on the way and it has inspired me to pick up the needles again. I have produced 2 little cardis and a cable pom pom hat over the last week and I am loving it. I had forgotten how relaxing it is.0 -
It's nice to be knitter again. Although I don't have grandchildren yet I'm still enjoying socks. Thanks to all who gave sock advice I have now sorted it and one sock it nearly done, I will take piccie and post when finished.
On another note..... I have bought an Aran hat pattern on ebay which says that tension is : 18sts and 26rows to 10sq.cm using 4.5mm needles
I have seen some nice wool which states It knits 18 sts and 22 rows to 10cm on 4.5 mm needles. What do I do? to get correct tension?0 -

I used silvers sock class to learn to knit socks, it is very straight forward and clearly explained so do give it a go. I soon found though that I preferred to use magic loop or two circular needles as I find it less fiddly. Don't give up on knitting in the round until you've tried all the options!0
