Apologies in advance if this question has been asked before! :o

I'm a beginner knitter and have started my first project a top. All has gone well until now. I am coming to the end of the ball. How do I join the new ball into the knitting? iykwim

I ran out coming to the end of the row. So I have taken it back to the beginning.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Electra

When you need to join a new ball, knit your first stitch in the row with your existing yarn, and the new ball together, then you can either knit the first stitch at that side on every other row until the wool is used, or sew it in later.

Not sure I have explained this very well, so maybe someone will be along later with a better explanation.

Can you wash wool just in a ball before you knit with it?I got some at the weekend from Freecycle and tbh some of it looks a bit manky and I would really feel a lot happier if it was washed before I handled or knitted with it.

I would make it into a "hank" before washing. Don't know if I can describe it clearly enough but.........
Hold the end between thumb and first finger, then take the ball under your elbow, up the other side of your arm and through the space between thumb and forefinger again. Keep going until all wool is wound round your forearm.
Slide it off carefully. Knot it in the middle, securely, not too tightly. Probably best to wash by hand or in a "delicates" bag if in the washer. Unknot and loop over a coathanger to dry.

You could always tie a knot in the two lengths of wool once they are a row apart

  • I remember reading somewhere that you should never tie a knot as over time it works itself loose! (Not sure where I read it though :o )

If I leave it at the side can I use it to join together the seams?

I've got the 3 issues for £3 subscription and my intention was to cancel after these three issues were received. With the £11.25 subscription it works out at £3.75 per month instead of the £4.99 cover price. At the moment I'm really happy with the pattens which are included and think it is worth the price but I intend to cancel as soon as this changes.

It works out buying the 3 issues for £11.25 is cheaper than the year at £49.99 so it might be worth doing it every 3 months if it stays at about that price.
    Did owe £9,951.96
