I'm going to have a go at making socks. I bought some dpn's in charity shop this morning. I also got two pairs of wooden needles as I got a pattern the other day for a bag that uses them as the handles which was really quirky so am going to make one for myself and one for a knitting friend for Christmas

Hi everyone - just wondering if any of you know of a site where I might find a pettern for 'mug warmers' please? Have got the notion to make a few of these as presents and fill the mug with goodies - but not doing very well in my quest to find a pattern and am certainly not an experienced enough knitter to make one up lol!

Given the demise of the high street wool shop, where is the best place to get needles ? I have looked on ebay and various sites just wanted to get some site wisdom. Also things have moved on since I was an avid knitter and there seem to be bamboo needles everywhere.. not sure if these are worth a try .. do they not catch on the wool fibres ?

    Thanks for you help

HLK - try the charity shops for needles, even worth asking in there, as they may have some 'out the back'.

Bamboo needles don't catch the fibres but the do seem to cling on to the knitting IMO and they always seem to come in long lengths and I like knitting on short pins.

There are still some wool shops about, but many have closed down, unfortunately. On Ravelry there's a page where you can search for stores in your area. There are also quite a few good on-line yarn stores - I particularly like The Woolly Workshop and Get Knitted - both have fantasic customer service.

Re bamboo needles - no, they don't catch, because they are very smooth. They are also very light, and don't get "sticky" like metal needles. I very much like knitting with bamboo. My favourite kind of needles now, though, are Quills - they just look like plastic needles, but they are made of casein and are wonderfully light and flexible and easy to knit with.

Ravelry - https://www.ravelry.com - has lots of patterns for just about anything you can imagine. A quick search of patterns for the word "mug" brought up 46 matches, many of them free.

Anyone who knits or crochets should be on Ravelry! - it is the best knitting/crochet site I have ever seen - a fantastic resource. Zillions of patterns (lots free), masses of information about yarns and needles, loads of forums on everything even vaguely related to yarn, thousands of other members willing to offer helpful information and tips - absolutely brilliant place to hang out :-)

It's still in beta, so invitation-only, but you can request an invitation on the front page and you'll get one within a day or two.

Thnaks for all the info Blueberry and Bella.. I rang a couple of charity shops but no joy, but I'll do a bit more research before I buy. I'll maybe try a pair of each type before I make my mind up.
