Well done chalky. What do you do in your spare time? Seriously, you've got some great stuff there, I especially love the boots.
Greenpixey - just love that gnome - what a beard, he'll be able to strain the pond weed out with that.

Hi All,
I have just started knitting, but am not very good at it yet - I can cast on using two needles, do a simple knit stitch and purl stitch, so can stocking stitch now, and cast off, but that's about it - and it's not great yet (lots of nasty holes, or stitches appearing from nowhere when I got carried away and tried to pick up a stitch I thought I might have dropped where there never was one lol).
I know I have to get better at the actual knitting bit, but am getting a bit bored of just knitting an oblong and then unpicking and redoing it (I don't want to waste yarn) so was wondering if anyone could suggest something practical to make? I was meant to be making something for my friend's new baby (whom is refusing to come out!) but don't think I have time for a blanket (from what I've knitted so far it would be a couple of weeks for this, and the baby was due today) nor enough yarn (although I did buy two rolls today for £2 - bargain!) so was thinking of a hat, but this seems super complicated from the patterns I've looked at.
All my teaching comes from 'how to' videos online, but the only things I can find for a hat use circular needles and I only have normal needles, 4mm and a pair of HUGE fat things (that I was using up until today as I was told it was easier - the 4mm I think are easier, but there you go). I also found a pattern that started talking about knitting 1 then purling 1, then doing an extra knit at the end of the row, without the purl, but I thought this would end up all squiffy, the the knits and purls not overlapping - or is this the way it's meant to be? :S
Please help! Or the baby is going to get a boring rectangle of knitting, as big as will fit on my needles....
Many thanks to anyone that can assist

Yes, I thought about a blanket too. You can do all the squares in garter stitch (all knit stitch), 24 stitches on size 4mm needles and knit until it's as broad as long to form a square. These will make a very attractive blanket to keep the new babe nice and snuggly.

Many thanks - didn't think about it being an assembled piece
Have started with some blue stocking stitch and got carried away and attempted a basket weave stitch - that looks like it might be working! Oh, this is sooo exciting (I really must get out more!)
Thanks again for the input, will let you know when I've finished what it turned into!Do not feed the trolls please.0 -
Hello knitters...
Could anyone direct me to a free pattern to knit balaclava's for my grandsons? I've got 7 of them, although the youngest 2 are a bit too small for them yet!
I really wanted to get them done for Christmas...but think I'm being a bit unrealistic there!
The problem is, I can find quite a few that need 4 needles but I can only knit with 2 and don't fancy trying to learn with 4 when I haven't got long to do them.
Thanks everso much

PixeyPie - if you do get out more don't forget you can take your knitting with you. It's a great way of starting a conversation and you can get so much done in those odd moments - on a bus or train, in the dentist waiting room etc. or just chatting to friends.
