Anyone ever tried to make custard style yog in the easiyo? - i see that julian graves don't seem to do it anymore

I wonder if just adding custard powder instead of milk powder would work - or does it need to be cooked?

  • Hi all, yogurt lovers,

I have got Easiyo yougurt maker for Christmas and I am using it since with great pleasure. Tried both methods, as well as the Easiyo sachets and "Rachels organic" yogurt with life cultures, and they seem to work fine for me.
Now my question is: when making it totally yourself, ( which I would prefer as the main method, as it is cheaper and the ingreadients easier to get...) i.e. using two tablespoons of bio yoghut with 1 liter of milk in the Easiyo jar topped up with boiling water, the result is tasty, but a bit fluid.

I would like to have a a bit more solid consistency in the end, yogurt, which is not flowing off the spoon like thin honey. Is that possible ?

Is there a kind of natural "thickener" (maybe another sort of yogurt or cottage cheese) which I can add, when making the yogurt, to give it a better "posture":o ??

    your answers are greatly appreciated

Why are you adding water? (I haven't read the rest of this thread so don't know if it was mentioned earlier.)

I just use milk, yoghurt and add a tablespoon or two of dried milk powder.

I have found that if I haven't used enough milk powder, it's more like drinking yoghurt.
  • Oops, that was my fault, I did not describe this clearly:I meant, I use hot water in the Easiyo maker, after filling the jar with the yoghurt and cold milk.

But thanks for the good hint to use milk powder, to give the yoghurt a thicker consistency, I will try this as soon, as I have finished the existing jar.

Ah, now I get you! :) I was puzzled!
  • just to let you know: It works perfect now with the milk powder added. It gives exactly the nice thickness, I like ! for a very low cost, fresh tasty yoghurt Each time...fair play to you...your advice was as good as gold !

    hi yummym (sp)

I don't know if you've read all of this thread, but if you want really thick yoghurt you can strain it through a muslin cloth - and get really thick yog and what I call "soor dook" the liquid that is left over and use that to make pancakes and scones

BTW I just bought some of the custard style mix from lakeland and it's yummy but soo expensive!

I got my Easi Yo yesterday and made the toffee yoghurt first. It turned out lovely but we found eating it an art form in itself. The yoghurt has the fluidity of treacle, thats not to say its thin and runny, far from it but it does have to be wound round the spoon and shoved in the mouth asap to stop it dripping.

Have now made a drinking youghurt and intend to put a strawberry one in the maker tonight.

I am definitely going to give the homemade a go but my question is this. All of you who are making the homemade are they plain. I assume that if you made one using a couple of tbs of the toffee yoghurt that it would have very little toffe flavour in the second batch.

I got my kit from QVC and it came with three of the fruit squirters which I imagine would be delicious with the greek yoghurt. (Not that I have ever tried Greek Yoghurt)

I normally buy Mullerlite yogs, weightwatchers yogs and occassionally Tesco finest which are heaven. I found the toffee yoghurt had a faint tang to it but very nice.

Looking forward to trying out the lemon, strawberry and Greek.

I make my yoghurt plain then add flavouring to the bit I dish up. Jam's good and is pretty much what those Easi-yo squirters are, but I've also used fruit and even milkshake mix!
