  • Stir frys are so easy. Visit a chinese grocery store and buy a bottle of oyster sauce, and you will find that the dried noodles they sell are alot cheaper to buy than the 'chinese' noodles that sell at regular supermarkets, so buy those at the chinese grocery shop as well. I am lazy so I always have a jar of minced garlic in the fridge. Another stir fry staple is sesame oil. It is a lot more expensive than regular oil but you only use a few drops, so it really isn't too expensive because you don't use much.

Have the noodles cooked and put to one side.
Put a few drops of sesame oil in a pan (wok style pan is best of course if you have one)
throw in a teaspoon of minced garlic (minced ginger is also good)
cook the diced meat, whatever meat you want. turkey is nice and cheap, cut it up small so it spreads a bit further.
When the meat is done pile in all the vegies you have finely chopped (peppers, mushrooms, onions, carrots, bean shoots, cabbage, etc. get ideas of what to put in by looking at the stir fry vegetable packs they sell in the supermarket).
Don't cook it for too long a few minutes, should be no more than 5, but it depends on how much you are cooking.
Throw in equivalent of a few tablespoons of oyster sauce
Add the noodles about 2 minutes before the end, they really only need to be quickly heated through.

The trick is don't cook it for too long because you want it to be a bit crunchy.

    So quick easy and yummy!

I think Sainsburys sell an oyster sauce but it is terrible. Buy it from a chinese grocery shop.

DS (17mo) isn't interested in food most days....so I admit (especially as he sleeps over lunchtime) I sometimes give up and don't make him anything as most of the time he won't eat my lovingly steamed veg and cheesy sauce dish (just random examples). If he's hungry I end up giving him Ryvita or an apple/carrot stick etc...

But I'd really prefer he ate balanced meals.

    Can anyone suggest anything please?

He hates tomato sauce, loves any meat, most fish and would happily live off frozen peas.
    He's allergic to avocadoes...

I need ideas that I can put together quickly and in small quantities. I tried the freeze-in-ice-cube-trays solution but most of it ended up in the bin as I'd defrost it only to find he wouldn't eat it. Very frustrating!

    Grateful for any ideas!

At his age he can pretty much have what you are. If he's not really hungry at lunch time, finger foods and then a meal at dinner time should be fine. Would maybe refrain from any snacks after breakfast, try and bring his nap time earlier (to prepare for no having one aswell) and a good meal at dinner time. http://parenting.ivillage.com/tp/tpnutrition/topics/0,,4rvj,00.html some info on there. I would suggest that you give him an early lunch (no morning snack) so that he can nap early afternoon.

Lunches were always sandwiches, cheese on toast, omlettes, mushrooms on toast, tuna mayo, boiled eggs.. anything like that can be done within 10 mins. I then fed my son what ever we were having for tea, with fruit juice and a fruit snack to make up his 5 a day.

I gave the children risotto today made with leftover pork roast from yesterday. I chopped up really small 1/2 a leek, 4 large mushrooms, handful of chopped pork (small) and grated a carrot, all into a pan with a dash of oil and a good handful of rice (basmati as it is all I have), 3 cube of homemade stock from the freezer a teaspoon of ground coriander. I added more water as it cooked. You could barely tell there was any veg in it (I like hidden veg)and it tasted delicious. Served it with peas and sweetcorn. All the children ate lots (aged 12months, 2 and 4)
