The staff who had been administering the mass of buyer appeals against negs will now be able to focus on policing buyer abuse of the feedback system.
That about sums it up. eBay want to be able to add more and more users without needing to add more staff. I don’t think it’s possible. Sadly, third-party oversight is necessary.

eBay’s purchase of Skype was a pointless waste of money. If they were going to buy anything, it should have been SquareTrade. In the same way that eBay Buyer Protection used to cover you for three claims in, I think, any one year period, they could give all users three free feedback challenges each year. That could be extended for PowerSellers and others with a large turnover, where they’d get extra free challenges in proportion to their turnover. Then, people could carry on giving out feedback for both buyers and sellers, with most of the malicious stuff getting weeded out. Users making unfounded challenges or losing challenges against their feedback would then need to be taken to task.
I should also add to my reply to bella above that only Powersellers will receive the protection against unauthorised payments.
I think that goes hand in hand with PayPal buys Israeli security firm.

  • Oh no! As a buyer and a seller I can see the bad side of this definately outweighs the good.
If a buyer is about to leave feedback will it be pointed out to them that the seller can't leave a neg/neutral?
Also, I presume a follow up to any neg can still be left - any unfair neg can be pointed out here.
And thirdly, if I receive an unfair neg then I will leave a positive but with (typed in upper case, exclamation marks etc) a negative comment.

    4. Positive Feedback percentage will be based on the past 12 months of Feedback, rather than lifetime, since it is most indicative of the seller's recent performance

so what happens if you take 12 months off from ebay? does your feed back revert to zero?

  • Dig a little deeper and you also find this little nugget:

Can Feedback still be removed via the Mutual Feedback Withdrawal system?

The current Mutual Feedback Withdrawal system will remain in place until the second half of 2008. The Feedback system will continue to evolve as community makeup and the online marketplace dynamics evolve.

So what then, are we not even going to be given the chance of sorting problems out with buyers who have left hasty negative feedback?

These changes to the feedback system are so messed up it's unbelieveable.

I expected to see some improvements in Seller Protection to match / compensate for the Feedback issue. But no still the same very basic Buyer Requirements.

And eBay are not altering their criteria for suspending buyers - if this was more stringent it should at least deter the real time-wasters (polite name).

Also, based on experience I'd like to have the option of blocking bidders who do not have a PayPal confirmed address. As a small-time private seller SOME of the buyers with unconfirmed addresses are the only ones that have ever caused me any real hassle. If this were possible it would go some way to compensating for not being able to leave feedback for buyers.

Like many others I think I'll be having one last push on de-cluttering before these changes take place.

Whilst the UK was all a fluster with the feedback and fee news, the US site also had this little nugget of good news - all addresses are considered confirmed & unpaid items with feature fees (Bold, gallery, subtitle) are creditted in full but for powersellers only.
PowerSeller fee discounts - For sales on or after February 20, 2008 (applied to the April 2008 invoice), as a reward for excellent customer service, PowerSellers with high detailed seller ratings (DSRs) over the past 30 days will receive discounts on Final Value Fees for their prior month's sales.
Unpaid Item protection - PowerSellers will receive a credit for any Feature Fees when a buyer does not pay for an item and the seller closes an unpaid item dispute. This program covers auction-style listings (excluding Dutch and Live Auctions) and single item fixed price listings on eBay.com, eBay.ca, eBay Express, and eBay Motors.
Expanded seller protection from PayPal - Beginning in February 2008, items sold by PowerSellers on eBay and paid for with PayPal will be covered against claims, charge-backs, reversals for unauthorized payments, and merchandise not received. Transactions must meet the terms of coverage. This protection is free to PowerSellers and eliminates the need for confirmed addresses.

Hopefully it will spread to the UK soon, and hopefully to all sellers, not just the registered businesses.

    I doubt it.

So powersellers will be covered, yet the smaller sellers won't and with lack of negative feedback, will no longer have any means of protecting themselves from dodgy buyers. Great, just great.

If ebay are working to get rid of the smaller sellers then this won't spread further that powersellers. I have posted elsewehere that they are setting up a two tier system, powersellers will get lower fees and enhanced protection and don't forget they already get telephone support. Ordinary bread and butter sellers will get nothing, we'll pay higher fees, we'll have some of the paypal protection against fraud removed and we will have to continue to struggle with the already over burdened email support system.

If you read the answers that the pinks are giving over on the forums then this seems deliberate. They say things like powersellers need more support to encourage them to continue to see ebay as a safe trading environment. The word power sellers or larger volume sellers is always used, they never just refer just to sellers en masse.
