  • I checked this situation out, If you have Comprehensive insurance you are insured to drive any car not owned by you only if it is insured and you will only have 3rd party cover. I suggest emergency use only and I feel that if an insurance company can wriggle out of a claim they will. Be cautious!!
  • Car Insurance.
I drive a 1990 Ford Sierra estate 1.8 My Comprehensive insurance with legal cover and No Claim Bonus protection. £103.50. I got this because I am a member of my local Credit Union, Averege saving is about 36%
Last year I insured a car for my 20 year old Son. Insurance was £780 I got it through the Credit Union for £480. Join your credit union, That will cost you £1, They do very cheap loans and all sorts of great money saving insurances.
My Insurance is with Norwich Union.
Re My £103.50 insurance, I am 66, Live on the Kent coast and I have 70% NCB so the cost depends on where you live and all the other stuff that insurance companies base their quotes on.
How do you find the credit union?
  • Here's a tip for young drivers (that's anyone under 30 as far as insurers are concerned ;D).

Make sure that your policy start date (and therefore renewal date) is not just before your birthday. Instead, aim to have the motor renewal as soon after a birthday as is possible.

If you renew each annual contract when only a few weeks away from a birthday then you effectively have a year's insurance rated on the wrong age (e.g. premium calculated for an 19 year old when you're actually 20 for most of the insurance year). Over 20 or 15 years this can add up to hundreds of pounds in premiums.
  • You can get a free personal radio and entry into a prize draw to win a Mini One if you get a quote from AA on 0870 243 1803 and quote reference 474....only valid until 30th November 2004 and your renewal is within 30days. Good luck folks and if you win, contact me for a spin in your new wheels! ;D 8)

Also if your mum or granny have a clean history adding them can save you ~15% - Don't ask me why but I've done it for years - saved over £150 once ;)

I just wanted to say a big thank you to the person who recommended https://www.confused.com

My insurance renewal was up and I had rung around and emailed all the usual suspects and was resigned to spending £505 on my renewal with my then current insurer (all the others were £50- £100 more). Imagine my pleasure to eventually end up paying £385 through the company https://www.confused.com found me!!

    Thanks MSE!!
  • Does anyone know if there is a car insurance company that will quote for only a month ?
My brother is visiting from Mexico and would like to drive my car.

Is it easier just to get him insured as a second named driver ?

    Thanks

@Sean - absolutely, definitely, the only way to do it. He doesn't own the car so can't insure it in his own name and a short-term policy would cost an arm and a leg in any case.

Should not cost all that much to add him for just one month, although if he lives abroad etc. that will up the premium some.
