Hi guys, I'm looking at car insurance for a Mazda MX-5, but due to my age (19) and 0 no claims, I have so far been unsuccessful (quotes in excess of £16000) and I don't even have any convictions... preposterous prices if you ask me, considering I want to do most driving with an owners club!

I have been looking into buying a car in Poland and having it registered and insured to a Polish address (rooms are mega cheap to rent there), and taking it to the UK for periods of 6 months, which is what many Polish citizens seem to be doing. I managed to get a quote for £200 for the year, which is fantastic, but I'm just concerned as to whether or not this is legal in case I got pulled by UK Police.

Does anybody have any sort of idea about how this would work and if I would be able to do this?

    Thanks, Adam

So long as you ae fully insured in poland, assuming british driving licence, ok with the none residential address, (don't know how you'll fair if they need to contact you), and you can manage to avoid the need to register the car in the uk. (6 months in the uk in any 12 month period, not 6 months in one stretch, or hope your local bobby doesn't pick you up on it), you may have a cunning plan. Personally, I reckon you'll be spotted on the 6 month rule, and the car will be impounded.

I used Compare and Confused to find a renewal and chose Tesco as it was nearly £50 less than my renewal from Churchill. I then decided to check direct with Tesco to compare the price and found that it was about £8 more than the quote but I would get points for buying from them plus £50 petrol. I never just renew after reading the Moneysavingexpert advice.:j Thanks Martin.
  • Can anyone help, my dad was paying Lloyds TSB £81 per month for his car insurance, I found him a cheaper quote and when he has rang up today to cancel his policy and request his proof of no claims bonus they have told him he has to pay £325 to cancel, which is basically the balance of the premium. He has had no claims so that is not the reason, the lady he spoke to just said that it was in the docs, surely this cant be right, what if he had just sold his car???

Ask them to itemise the charges, and if they don't match up to the charges for early termination set out on the policy take it from there.
  • Hi. thinking of getting a cheap run around car (anything up to £500 quid, probably around ten years old) Been looking into the insurance costs and am amazed at the prices.

I drove from 21-24 years old then got rid of my car as the city i lived in had decent public transport. Now I've moved i need a car again at 27. I had 3 years no claims, i know I've lost that but when i was insured before it was around the 600-800 mark. Now at older (over the supposed magic 25 mark) insurance seems to be 1100+, some quotes I've seen are crazy.

Am i missing a trick or has insurance really gone up in 3 years?

    Any advice appreciated.

    Kyle.

3 years NCB is probably worth about 50% discount, so £1100 with 0 NCD is actually a cheaper base price.

Exactly when did you last hold car insurance? The reason I ask is that co-op accept NCD up to 3 years old.

My renewal from Swinton came through at £285, checked on Go Compare (and others) and got alternative quotes below £175 for same level of cover. Called Swinton and they suddenly managed to give me a far better deal: Under £27/month (£316 p.a.) with £160 automatic cashback after 90 days, total insurance cost £156 for the year.
That's comprehensive cover with glass, legal, NCD and excess protection.
On that basis it's always worth haggling as I halved the price of my insurance and stayed with the same people!
  • How can you KNOW that a car has been modified and what do insurers class as a modification.

I had a 2.0 litre, 140 bhp, Peugeot Convertible but I traded it in to buy a 1.6 litre 100 bhp Ford Focus. I took the view that insuring it would be easier and cheaper than the old car. CIS, my existing insurer, declined to insure the Focus because of the "modifications."

The problem was the Ford fitted 17 inch alloy wheels which were an OPTION supplied when the car was new. The car also had tinted rear windows, a blue tooth pack and built in sat nav but the insurer was worried about the wheels. I assumed, wrongly, that if Ford recommended the wheels on a new car they must be safe and there shouldn't be a problem.

I was only aware of the wheel size because the car was five months old and the dealer listed all the factory fitted options. If I had bought the car privately or from another dealer I would have been totally unaware of any so called modification.

With so many factory fitted options to a modern car (yes the ashtray is an option on the Focus) how can you hope to stay on the right side of the insurers? My Peugeot has been sold but I drove it around for two years. I have no idea whether the alloys on it were other than the standard ones fitted.

This episode cost me a years no claims bonus because I had to insure elsewhere half way through the insurance period. To add insult to injury I also had to pay a cancellation fee.
