I would get rid of both dogs to be honest. Not just because of the cash side (although to keep a dog properly is both expensive and time-consuming), but it sounds like you have more than enough to cope with, having 5 kids, and frankly they are more important than the dogs.
Plus it's not fair on a dog the rottie's size to be kept without enough exercise - they need it!0 -
Hi Mollybear
Just wondered if you had made a decision about the puppy yet?

Yeah, I wondered too - for all the brave talk I know it would probably be a heartbreaking thing to have to do (though definitely the right thing in the circs). I had a relative who did this after mistakenly getting a puppy (nagged into it by the kids). It was a pedigree dog and cost him an absolute fortune as well as the basket, toys etc and the poor little thing was miserable cos no one was home all day. He rehomed it with an elderly man and apparently the dog didn't even look back as he took it away. Def affected the owner more than the dog.
I do think you're trying to be responsible in rehoming it, we've all seen poor dogs wandering the roads where owners have abandoned them to their fate.
And hope everything else is settling down a bit too!0 -
I don't think this topic should turn into a hounding one either for broken hearted or OP.
You do not know what experiences people have had, I have seen a lot of animal cruelty and feel passionately about animals getting the right care. Just this week my MIL labrador dropped down dead outside through loving it, she never walked it, but continued over feeding. Sometimes in life we can do the wrong thing trying to do the right thing.
I personally belive a rottie sized dog needs walking each day so should be rehomed and a puppy needs the care that anyone with 5 children would struggle to do.
It is important not to shoot the messenger if there basic advice is good intenioned just the phrasing is blunt.
Again there are law issues here that everyone overlooks it is illegal to keep an animal you can not properly care for no matter how good intenioned you are.
I believe the OP has good intentions but at this time in her life cannot deliver so rehoming both dogs and concentrating on the children and the stresses they have is both sensible and admirable. Its Ok to air a problem it is unforgiveable after airing to ignore it.0
