I like the 1.5kg packsof cooking bacon from Lidl, they are usually about £1.49 and always have good bacon in them, sometimes it's lots of rashers or little bits (great for bubble and squeak, soups, casseroles etc), but mostly there are huge chunks in there! Boil them up in a pan of water for an hour, add potatoes and vegetables to the pot if you like for a one pot, or just do the bacon on its own.

Seconded!..Although it takes a bit of rooting around in the box to get the right pack..I use them in place of Gammon.
  • We buy then 3 for £2.00 from our local butchers, We make Tortillas, Quiche Loranne, Bacon and Egg pies, Bacon and lentil soup and I even make stews with it. I think it tastes better.

After reading this thread I've bought a vacuum pack of gammon pieces (92g) Can anyone advise if I can cook them all together in the slocooker please? Would it be necessary to rinse a couple of times like you do with gammon joints and could I maybe end up with some stock for soups? Should I take the visible fat off first? (Trying to use healthy options!) Thanks for any advice.

The's a company over here in NI called Lovell & Christmas, they are a food manufacturer & one of their products is bacon.I can buy a large pack of FULL bacon rashers what are a better quality that the main brands for £1 in the Pound Shops (NOT Poundland & the like, the smaller pound retailer)
One pack lasts me nearly 2 weeks!
Problem is it's so popular here that the pound shop where I live usually has sold out within a day of new stock arriving!...
  • Fry off and add to pasta with a tin of tomatoes, a chopped fried onion, mushrooms, herbs and garlic

Make a bacon Jack .. suet pastry , onions and mixed herbs , then either pressure cook or cook in a slow cooker wrapped in foil .
Serve with mash veg and gravy.
it will fill you up and you can also freeze it.

    hi all

I have just found a packet of cooking bacon in the back of the fridge - i used some of it in a coq au vin, and will also make pea and ham soup - but have you any other ideas for how to use it up today?

I have googled but it just gives me ideas for how to cook bacon rather than how to use 'cooking bacon"....

    thanks

i buy it a lot as well - i often wrap chicken breasts in it and freeze them....or i use it to make a brunch version of egg fried rice with big chunks of cooking bacon in and mushrooms ( we have hens so have eggy meals quite often)

it needs using up today so need things to cook and freeze...or things that will be eaten today...

just made a large pan of split pea soup with lots of bacon in, which i will split into portions and freeze

......but still have half a packet of bacon left.....

might have to do a pasta bake for tea with bacon in....but will still have a quarter of the packet left...

    any more suggestions?

i have a well stocked pantry but not much in the way of fresh ingredients...
