The semantics are over my head.

Fortunately, you can leave the billing system to sort it out. It has a detailed knowledge of non-chargeable and chargeable services. Only chargeable services are associated with an account.
All I know is I make sure my weekend UK 01/02/03/0845 & 0870 calls route via BT and I have never been charged for Caller Display.
My practice too, but I get charged £0.00.

  • So no matter how much you dislike the description 'free' replacing it with 'non-chargeable' is inaccurate.

I was relying on one version of my online bill when I wrote that. It shows Charges for BT Privacy At Home as £0.00, which is incorrect. The pdf version of the bill correctly has no charges for Caller Display. I should also have consulted the Price List:
Caller Display is currently available as an opt-in rented service as part of the BT Calling Features pack offerings. However, it will be provided free of charge when customers order it as part of the BT Privacy At Home package.
So there was no inaccuracy when you called it non-chargeable.

The service does not become chargeable if the requisite numbers of calls are not made but BT apply a low usage charge.

I never said 'non-chargeable' was necessarily accurate. I simply think it's a reasonable bit of thinking and much closer to the truth than "free". Which is in itself a complete fabrication ie a lie.

I use a CPS calls provider, override providers and the 1280 prefix to route my weekend 01/02 calls via BT. As a result of the latter, I have never paid for Caller Display,

I have a current account with a major bank and avoid charges by complying with their rules by not bouncing cheques, always havings enough funds available to cover direct debits and standing orders and not going into unauthorised overdraft.

    I regard both as free.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Just wondering whether there has been a change in the t&cs for Caller Display as the current info states:
Customers who are billed monthly must make at least two chargeable calls with BT in that month, other wise BT reserves the right to charge £2.59 a month for BT Caller Display. Customers who are billed every three months must make at least six chargeable calls within those three months, otherwise BT reserves the right to charge £7.77 a quarter.

There is no longer any reference to inclusive calls - just chargeable ones:question:

It may be an omission. But there's nothing to worry about - you can use your chargeable calls to 01/02/03/056/0845/0870 numbers lasting less than 60 minutes at weekends to avoid the £2.59 charge.

1471 and Caller Display are two separate things.

1471 is where you have to dail 1471 to find out the number of the last caller.

Caller Display is where your phone shows you who is calling when the phone rings (assuming you have a compatible phone).
