    Hi All,

I'm really sorry that there has been some conflicting information given about whether chargecard calls count towards the minimum call commitment. I would like to clarify that chargecard calls do not count towards the minimum call commitment

At least two calls per month on monthly billing or six calls per quarter must be made. Excludes calls to 0800 number ranges, 1471 and 1571. Chargecard calls are excluded. 1471 Call Return (press 3) is included. The calls are either chargeable or those that would be made as part of an inclusive calls package. Customers who make all their calls via BB Talk are not eligible for free Caller Display on their landline number.

    Sorry for any confusion caused.

You were told utter nonsense by yet another poorly-trained BT bod (or, it appears, by two poorly-trained BT bods).

Indeed I was - gggrrrrrrrrr !!! - went back armed with Patrick's comments and yup, inclusive calls count. Big thanks to Heinz/Patrick; have now extracted myself from Sky and re-joined BT.

  • can I just confirm this again about the inclusive calls on a calling plan enabling you to get caller disaply free as nowhere on the site does it mention this - it only states chargeable calls:

BT Privacy at Home* gives you more control over incoming calls by registering you for the Telephone Preference Service which helps stop unwanted sales calls.
It also includes Caller Display**, which lets you see the number of the person who's calling, so you can decide whether or not you want to take the call.
Caller Display cannot disclose the number if the number is withheld or unavailable. To use this service you'll need either a compatible phone or a Caller Display unit.
You can sign up now online in Your Account
    * BT Privacy helps stop unwanted sales calls by registering you with the Telephone Preference Service and giving you BT Caller Display at no extra charge. From 1st October 2006, customers who do not make some chargeable calls with BT will be charged for BT Caller Display. Customers with other call providers can still benefit from BT Caller Display at no extra cost if the following calls are made. Customers who are billed monthly must make at least two chargeable calls with BT in that month, other wise BT reserves the right to charge £2.50 a month for BT Caller Display. Customers who are billed every three months must make at least six chargeable calls within those three months, otherwise BT reserves the right to charge £7.50 a quarter. If you do not currently make calls with BT and would like to start making your calls with us again, please call 0800 121 8088. Alternatively, if you'd like to make one-off calls that are chargeable to your BT bill then simply dial the numbers 1280 before you dial the phone number you wish to call.
** BT residential customers making some calls on the BT network can opt in to receive Caller Display for free, subject to availability. Analogue lines only. Caller Display equipment required. Numbers will not be registered if the call is from payphones; some switchboards; non-BT networks; or where a caller's number is withheld. Allow 28 days for activation of Telephone Preference Service. Terms and conditions apply.

I think you really mean non-chargeable rather than "free". Caller display is not free. If it were free there'd be no need for all this repetition and questioning.

BT has the world's most convoluted websites so, when someone finds something useful, I save the link. The below post has one such:

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

The meaning of 'non-chargeable' is 'unable to charge'. An indication of BT's ability to charge can be gathered from the posts describing what happens when the condition for free caller display has not been met.

The caller display is non-chargeable should the person meet the requirements ie BT won't (ie can't -literally- I assume via their systems) place a charge or allow the charge to stand on the nett billing statement. That's probably the closet I can think up without getting too deep in to the semanitcs but only idiot could call their service "free".

It can be complicated no doubt with much use of smoke and mirrors by BT, Sky, TalkTalk etc but that's their whole business. It's up to the consumer to decide.

A customer is eligible for BT Privacy At Home (which includes Caller Display) under certain conditions. Not meeting the conditions incurs a charge of £7.50 per quarter.

Looking at my account I see for this service:
Total Monthly charges are : 0.00
(The bolding in the quote is mine).

So no matter how much you dislike the description 'free' replacing it with 'non-chargeable' is inaccurate.

The semantics are over my head. All I know is I make sure my weekend UK 01/02/03/0845 & 0870 calls route via BT and I have never been charged for Caller Display.
