Sammy's thread reminds me of myself years ago when we had a large mortgage and no spare cash. I made cakes, biscuits, pizzas, infact anything i could make I did with the exception of bread which was cheap staple then, unlike now. It was in the days before "value brands" but on of our supermarkets sold flour, cereal, dried fruit and lots of other stuff loose. This in the 1980's.
Over the years things have become a lot easier, but after reading your thread and having been shopping today I've realised just how wasteful we are as a family.
Putting the shopping away, before I put stuff in the fridge, I had to throw out left over roasted veg, a bag and half of casserole veg, a pack of green beans, 1/2 tin baked beans, half a pack cooked ham, 1/2 a pack cooked pork loin, 3 out of date yoghurts and some left over roast chicken.
lettuce, some tomatoes that had gone a bit mouldy and some carrots that had gone mushy.
I've decided to try and be a bit more organised and have a go at meal planning, really try not to be so wasteful and maybe save a bit of cash at the same time0 -
I know that with our dodgy payroll system if there is a mistake we are obliged to give a wage advance of 60% of the money owed. The other 40% must be held back for tax & NI contributions any left is added on next pay packet. His employer has a duty of care & should come up with a solution of sorts.
On a separate note your shopping budget is amazing ,you are an inspiration.sammy_kaye18 wrote: »Thats normally why we have made double quantities in the past becuase me little one normally runs off with the spoon! Have to make some more of them today - bf beens nagging me to have them.
Werent impressed this month - his work forgot to give him his christmas bonus (£150) and have underpaid him by £400 this month! and they've said that he cant have a cheque this month he will have to wait till next months pay day (about the 24th Feb) so he is a bit p@@@ed off to say the least. So now hes overdrawn by £90! Thankfully my wages come in tomorrow although no idea how much that is going to be as i was off ill last month. But i have £200 of bills to pay and my normal wage is only £250! and bf needs petrol for the month! Fingers crossed his work will realise this and help him out by getting him his money early.0 -

This thread---& others like it on MSE---have inspired me to look at just how much food we waste, but more so, to do something about it.
Thanks for showing us how a little forethought can save us both time & money. As an example, I found a smallish dish of bol sauce in the freezer, so I'll bulk it up with extra peppers & mushrooms to make either tortillas or cannelloni using pancakes for tonight. I would never have done something like this before....

Sammy Kaye I just want to say thankyou Thankyou THANK.....YOU !!!! :T :T :T :A
"What for?" do I hear you asking yourself ???
Well for taking the time to post your shopping list AND your basic weekly menu plan, especially as you seem like a very busy mum & homecook :T
I'm not one of the people who has nagged you to post this (well not that I remember) but I've asked for this sort of detailed help in the past in the OS forum and not received what I was expecting...
Not that I'm complaining coz after seeing how much content there is in your posts I can see now it was alot to ask of anyonebut that is why you've been nominated & won the post of the month imho :T
But I am SOOOOOOOO glad that you have done it and I shall definitely be giving it a go as soon as I can
Just out of interest what day of the week do you normally go shopping???
Also do you have any similar tips for housework at all ??? :whistle:You should never call somebody else a nerd or geek because everybody (even YOU !!!) is an"anorak" about something whether it's trains, computers, football, shoes or celebs:rotfl:
