What a great thread sammy, its made me look at my shopping bill and realise that i am not a frugal shopper as i thought! I do more cooking from scratch than i used to but i am still on the learning curve.
I have the receipt for twinks hobnobs and the bread (have tried my own bread using Delia it came out ok but not wonderful) so when im not at work i will try them
I have also bought my first container of stardrops - how fab!
I already make cakes and biscuits/flapjacks but i struggle with finding the time at the moment for a bigger bake day, i tend to use my days off as a full bake day but it doesnt last all week and as i dont have the time i end up at the shop buying bread ect
I will try harder lolLove a charity shop bargain0 -
2 x free range eggs box of 12 - £4.90 - I buy eggs at the greengrocers, as they are cheaper then in Tesco, and yes, they are free range. HTH
Like someone else mentioned before, Lidl is good for veg and fruit etc. Some other items are cheaper is well. But only if you have one nearby....
I think you are doing fantastic Sammy_kate.
I want to get there, but one step at a time......I wish Germany had a website like moneysavingexpert!0 -

Hi there,
Even though I am a stay at home mum (two boys under 3) I haven't got that much time.
I tend to make the bread dough in the morning and then just leave it to rise all day (our kitchen is very cold). To make the dough takes me 5-10 minutes. Then I shape it, put it in the tin or on a tray, cover with a towl or oiled plastic foil and voila.
When I do the cooking, I tend to stick the bread in the oven for 30 min.
It does take me little time and effort, and we always have fresh bread.
You can do this overnight too.

Hi, thanks for that kick up the bum, having reread your post i have come to realise that i do waste too much time when i could be cooking more, told you i was still on that learning curve!
You have 2 young boys and still manage it, all i do is work in an office which i know bears no comparison to what 2 littleuns can get up to!!
I will really look at my time and pledge to make the most of it and im sure i can be like you in having fresh bread ect all week long.
Now off to see where i can get some cheap bread tins from!!:rotfl:Love a charity shop bargain0 -
Great thread sammy...I looked at this about 3 times yesterday, and you really have your head screwed on...well done hun. I'm a mom to 5 and stay at home, husband works...My 2 boys moved out, one to university so it leaves me hubby and 3 girls at home. I spend on average £62 per week at asda...We also have 2 cats, 2 dogs and 4 gerbils...Hubby pays for dog food though...We eat really well. Hubby and 1 daughter take packed lunche to school and work and this also includes all my cleaning stuff...I think i do pretty well with the money...I do lots of my own, cottage pies. spag bol, fruit slabs, stews/casseroles so your thread was quite an eye opener...Only allow chips once a week and love fresh veg and roast dinners...I honestly dont think i could get our food shop down any lower but you never know...Also I must mention, my eldest is in 3rd year at uni and I take his food over to him. Like christmas I just add few tins to order, pasta, rice basics and save them till i go over to him every couple months....so £62 per week food I'm really happy with...Keep up the great work sammy:DBest Competition Wins-Brand New Vauxhall Corsa & £30000

Hi...I've signed up to the Grocery Challenge, & they all sing your praises in there:p I can see why now:eek:
My own personal challenge for Fenruary is to sneak in more pulses, to eek out the meat side of things. We are a family of me, plus the three adult children who all love being carnivores, so it's not going to be easy;)
So any ideas will be more than gratefully received! I've managed to hide three tins of baked beans into 2 ea sheep pie & lasagane by straining the tins & using the juice in the bol sauce. Then I rinsed the beans & blitzed them to a pulp so they didn't look in the least bit beany:rotfl: Even Pup enjoyed it mixed in with his tomato mince;)Full time Carer for Mum; harassed mother of three;loving & loved by two 4-legged babies.

Hi glitterycloud,
don't be to harsh on yourself. Just take one step at the time, otherwise you set yourself up for failure, and we don't want that!!!!!
Sammy is doing a great job, but I am sure, she had her hiccups on the way too. As we all have!

Hiya Egon, im not really being too hard on myself but sometimes i am a bit lazy!! So challenging myself this month will be good.:j
So far I have worked out my meal plans, written a food list - costed it all and bought the lot.
I have started cooking and so far have made flapjacks, hm rolls and hm pies (for the first time). Tomorrow I have planned to cook a few other things like apple braid and garlic bread. I have told DH that I have done this months food shopping and we will be cooking from scratch so it will be MSE. DH is pleased with this but got bit worried when I mention making pies - I can't do that he said!
I am not really worried if im not all that good as practice makes perfect and everyone starts off at the beginning.
I have only planned to cook on my days off as I know thats when I'll have most time, and if i freeze some things then when im working i can just shove it in the oven when I get home!!:DLove a charity shop bargain0 -
My local Asda has Free Range eggs on offer at the moment. 18 for £2.00. Not sure if this is a national offer though.0
