  • The problem is all new OS releases will have bugs, security issues etc that have not been identified upon release.

Some of these bugs are only identified in real world usage once a OS has been released.

MS cannot test every Hardware/Software configuration going. Its impossible and what your suggesting would mean we would never get a OS release in 10, 20 etc etc years.

Im running Mac OS X Leopard and Ive had numerous bug fixes and security issue updates for the OS. Same goes for any other OS.

So its not a MS only issue.

No the problem is that customers are not getting the service that they were promised, also a company should not release goods if they are no good or flawed.

If MS cannot test the software before release then it shouldnt be released, or any other software manufacturer of major PC packages namely an OS and its not laziness at all its "we will let the customer send in error reports and do our job for us".

I live in the "real world" where do MS live????

Also if you had read my earlier comment I did say I wasnt MS bashing. ;)

for the average user xp pro isn't worth it (compared to xp home) it really only adds a few networking features.

Can't believe anyone would recommended XP Home over XP Pro even for a home user, it is an insecure nightmare! XP Pro is much more secure, I wouldn't touch XP Home with a bargepole, there are so maybe issues and differences, they are two totally different beasts, XP Home is akin with the mess which was Windows ME.

The networking and other "advanced" features are useful for power-users, or those with home networks, but for the better core OS, XP Pro still should be the OS to downgrade to, not XP Home.

Hopefully any flavour of Vista will be more secure than XP Home...

Have to say the games graphics weren't spectacular on the difference engine.

:T but it was damn sight better looking than most beige or black PC towers ;)

I agree and defy anyone to say it isn't a thing of beauty. I love the meccano recreations (which if invented slightly earlier may have let Babbage actually build it):

I don't think MS or any other software manufacturer have any clear goals of releasing Bug Free software.

There are for too many variables and configurations they would have to test. They need to make money!

Once the Beta Testers have done their bit, the bugs can be considered manageable. The main flaws identified, those remaining will not necessarily be noticed by the average paying user.

Get the software out on the shelves and use the revenue to aid the investigations into the remaining flaws (most of which will be found by the paying customers through the error reporting tool!!)

We are all effectively Beta testers for all software, but we have to pay for it.

If all the OS flaws had to be rectified before release, we would still be on Windows 3.1.

    If we were lucky.

As you said they've got to account for an almost infinite variety of configurations. Yet even when you have just 1 like a console, you still get bugs and releases of new firmware etc.

I've used XP home since 2000 but I'm confused as to how XP Pro can be more secure than Home when it's the same OS at heart?

    I like this errrrrrr Case!

Dont fancy doing any upgrades to it and I would image the airflow is fairly minimal (I assume it is fanless!!)

I'll keep it simple, What your proposing will never work for any OS release. No bugs, No flaws. Not 1 single one, No Chance.

You may live in the real world but your not being very realistic;)

There is a fairly good comparison of XP Pro versus Home HERE.
