6 month old Gateway laptop. Clean re-install. Working perfectly fine until I started the windows updates. Now rebooting on it's own, for fun. No other software installed yet.

I really do despair.

Come on Microsoft, at least give us some hope you're trying to sort this rubbish out.

the sp1 is no better by all accounts while xp sp3 is 10% faster.

joy unbound however my laptop is not xp compatible as tosh havent sorted out the drivers properly, at least its enough of a beast to run it with only 14% cpu load doing !!!!!! all.

you sure its the OS rebooting? Its not overheating or anything? after a reboot incident have a peek in event viewer and see if it sheds any light

it may be worth going to xp, it will be supported until 2014 at the earliest. You can get an oem copy for 55 so cheap as chips really.
I know it is the fasion to have a go at ms but although xp was a pain when it 1st came out. it was clear after a short time of use it was far superior to win98. All vista is, is xp with drm, thats why it is so slow.

If you have just got the lappy then reinstall windows again and see if it clears it

for the average user xp pro isn't worth it (compared to xp home) it really only adds a few networking features.
