Last Saturday I bought 4 baking potatoes which we didn't use. DH threw them in the bin today as the use by date was 16/1. Now today is 19/1 but who EVER heard of potatoes going off in 3 days?

Anyway, I fished them out, picked the eyes out and popped them in the oven. They smell fab.

Now they're ready to come out. Shall I brave it and eat one? Right after posting I'll go put it on a plate with a bit of butter and then I'll have a think.

ohhhh Fletch! i most definately would have used the potatoes, even after their use by date but NOT after they'd been binned. I couldn't bring myself to delve into the waste bin and get anything out no matter what it was.

Thers's money saving....and there's risking your health to money save. Just my opinion.

The sniff test always works in our house! Meat, eggs and fish I'm wary of but veg, fruit, tins & packets - I just sniff!! I would definitely have eaten those potatoes - they keep for yonks, as do most veg. If you keep them somewhere cool, like a garage they're fine.

Actually you're much better off buying this stuff loose in the first place! It's cheaper and has NO sell by date to worry about!

I can't really see a problem with fishing them out of the bin.
After all, your hands put the other stuff into the bin, OK you will have washed your hands, but the spuddies were then baked.

Kethry....I think mozarella in a bag tends to 'blow' the bag if it's off.

ohh good to know - the bag is still very squishy, it doesn't feel like its full or anything like that.

still, i guess we'll see in the morning when i open it up!!

    Thanks!!!

Last time I forgot about one in the fridge, the bag looked like it had been pumped up....straight into the bin.
But, I read on the questions thread that you can freeze mozarella....kicked myself for not buying the huge slab that was yellow stickered just after Christmas.

My SIL one Xmas bought a frozen turkey, took it out of the freezer a few days before to defrost, and left it to thaw in the garage in its plastic bag fully sealed. She opened it to sort it out Xmas Eve and it smelt a bit. Well it would wouldn't it they always do when you open the bag. She just threw it in the bin and bought a fresh one! My Mum was mortified.

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?
  • .................................. so I didn't die of a TUBOUR (boom boom)

For those of you worried about my iffy ways of deliving into the bin, it's a carrier bag. There's not days worth of waste in in. It was also in a pre packed bag from Asda so there was no cross contamination. My DH was black affronted though at my antics. Still 2 gorgeous potatoes with butter and cheese for tea.... delish (and effectively FREE)

Kethry, how's the cheese this morning? Whatatwit's theory sounds viable to me to be honest. I'd go with that!

  • On a similar theme, my lodger doesn't use the green parts of cauliflowers at all - she surgically removes them. I wait till she's finished cooking and then I help myself, (not from the bin!) - saves it going out for compost and I prefer the greenery to the white part of cauli! I usually chop it up and stir fry it - mmmm delicious.

If you have a talent, use it in every which way possible. Don't hoard it. Don't dole it out like a miser. Spend it lavishly like a millionaire intent on going broke.
